Tracing the Pop Song from 1260 to the Present
Monday, April 13th
7:00 PM
Highland Recital Hall
Conductor's Note: The "pop song" as we know it came into
light around 1950, but the roots go much deeper.
Stephen Foster wrote songs in the 1800s like "Oh Susanna" or "Camptown Races" that still find their way into culture today. But the roots still go deeper. Long before Taylor Swift wrote whole breakup albums, Robert Schumann composed "Dichterliebe". Billy Joel borrowed from Beethoven, Paul Simon borrowed from Bach, and we've found throughout time that we're still writing secular songs about the same things: friendship, commentary on our world, and all the seasons of love that brighten or complicate our lives.
We hope you enjoy the concert tonight. Thanks for being here.

Sumer is Icumen In (Summer has arrived)
(Sung in Middle English)
Summer has come in,
loudly sing cuccu
The seed grows, the meadow blows,
And the wood springs anew, sing cuccu.
The ewe bleats after the lamb,
The cow lows after the calf,
Bullock starts, buck farts, merrily sing cuccu.
Don't ever stop. Sing cuccu.

Turn, Turn, Turn
To everything, turn, turn, turn
There is a season, turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose under heaven
A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep
To everything, turn, turn, turn
There is a season, turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose, under heaven
A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones
A time to gather stones together
To everything, turn, turn, turn
There is a season, turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose under heaven
A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace
A time to refrain from embracing
To everything, turn, turn, turn
There is a season, turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose under heaven
A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it's not too late

Sing We and Chant It
Sing we and chant it
While love doth grant it.
Not long youth lasteth,
And old age hasteth.
Now is best leisure
To take our pleasure.
All things invite us
Now to delight us.
Hence, care, be packing!
No mirth be lacking!
Let spare no treasure
To live in pleasure.

Lebenslust (Life's Joy)
If you are full of the lust for life,
you will not be alone
It is bleak to be alone
who can be happy that way?
In a cozy circle with a warm kiss,
To live together
is happiness for the soul.

Born at the Right Time
Down among the reeds and rushes
A baby boy was found
His eyes as clear as centuries
His silky hair was brown
Never been lonely
Never been lied to
Never had to scuffle in fear
Nothing denied to
Born at the instant
The church bells chime
And the whole world whispering
Born at the right time
Me and my buddies we are travelling people
We like to go down to restaurant row
Spend those Euro-dollars
All the way from Washington to Tokyo
But I see them in the airport lounges
Upon their mother's breast
They follow me with open eyes
Their uninvited guest
Too many people on the bus from the airport
Too many holes in the crust of the earth
The planet groans
Every time it registers another birth
But down among the reeds and rushes
A baby girl was found
Her eyes as clear as centuries
Her silky hair was brown

O Whistle and I'll Come to Ye
O whistle and I'll come to ye my lad,
O whistle and I'll come to ye my lad,
Tho father and mother and all should go mad,
O whistle and I'll come to ye my lad,
But take you great care when you come to court me,
And come not unless the back gate be a-jee (ajar),
Then up the back path and let nobody see,
And come as ye were not comin' to me.
I'll whistle and you'll come to me my lass,
I'll whistle and you'll come to me my lass,
Tho your father and mother and all should go mad,
I'll whistle and you'll come to me my lass,
At kirk (church) or at market whene'er ye meet me,
Go by me as tho that ye cared not a flee,
But steal me a blink of your bonnie black eye,
Yet look as ye were not lookin' at me
Ay vow and protest that ye care not for me,
At times ye may laugh at my beauty a wee,
But court not another tho jokin' ye be,
For fear that she whil your fancy frae me

Across the Universe
Note: "Jai Guru Deva Om"
is a Sanskrit-based mantra
which roughly translates to
"I give thanks to the divine teacher"
Jai Guru Deva. Om.
Words are flowing out
like endless rain into a paper cup
They slither wildly as they slip away
across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy
are drifting through my opened mind
Possessing and caressing me
Jai Guru Deva.
Nothing's gonna change my world.
Images of broken light
which dance before me like a million eyes
They call me on and on
across the universe
Thoughts meander
like a restless wind inside a letter box
They tumble blindly
as they make their way across the universe
Jai Guru Deva.
Nothing's gonna change my world.
Sounds of laughter, shades of life
are ringing through my opened ears
Inciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love
which shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe
Jai Guru Deva.
Nothing's gonna change my world.

From the Start
Don't you notice how
I get quiet when there's no one else around?
Me and you and awkward silence
Don't you dare look at me that way
I don't need reminders of how you don't feel the same
Oh, the burning pain
Listening to you harp on 'bout some new soulmate
"She's so perfect, " blah, blah, blah
Oh, how I wish you'll wake up one day
Run to me, confess your love, at least just let me say
That when I talk to you, oh, Cupid walks right through
And shoots an arrow through my heart
And I sound like a loon, but don't you feel it too?
Confess I loved you from the start
What's a girl to do?
Lying on my bed, staring into the blue
Unrequited, terrifying
Love is driving me a bit insane
Have to get this off my chest
I'm telling you today
That when I talk to you, oh, Cupid walks right through
And shoots an arrow through my heart
And I sound like a loon, but don't you feel it too?
Confess I loved you from the start
Just thinking of you
I know I've loved you from the start

Golden Hour
It was just two lovers
Sittin' in the car, listening to Blonde
Fallin' for each other
Pink and orange skies, feelin' super childish
No Donald Glover
Missed call from my mother
Like, "Where you at tonight?" Got no alibi
I was all alone with the love of my life
She's got glitter for skin
My radiant beam in the night
I don't need no light to see you
Shine
It's your golden hour (oh)
You slow down time
In your golden hour (oh)
We were just two lovers
Feet up on the dash, drivin' nowhere fast
Burnin' through the summer
Radio on blast, make the moment last
She got solar power
Minutes feel like hours
She knew she was the baddest, can you even imagine
Fallin' like I did?
For the love of my life
She's got glow on her face
A glorious look in her eyes
My angel of light
I was all alone with the love of my life
She's got glitter for skin
My radiant beam in the night
I don't need no light to see you
Shine
It's your golden hour
You slow down time
In your golden hour

Tourdion (Quand je bois du vin clairet)
When I drink claret wine, the world is turning.
From now on I think I'll drink Anjou or Arbois.
Sing, my friends, and drink, and wage a war upon the bottle,
Wine will make us merry, singing:
“Leave your sorrows all forgotten, and sing!”
Eating ham, let's drink and sing,
And wage a war upon the bottle!
Drink, my friends, oh, drink well, and gladly sing.
Eating ham, let's drink and sing,
And wage a war upon the bottle!

Fine Knacks for Ladies
Fine knacks for ladies, cheap, choice, brave and new,
Good pennyworths but money cannot move,
I keep a fair but for the fair to view,
A beggar may be liberal of love.
Though all my wares be trash, the heart is true.
Great gifts are guiles and look for gifts again,
My trifles come as treasures from my mind,
It is a precious jewel to be plain,
Sometimes in shell the Orient's pearls we find.
Of others take a sheaf, of me a grain.
Within this pack pins, points, laces and gloves,
And diverse toys fitting a country fair,
But in my heart, where duty serves and loves,
Turtles and twins, Court's brood, a heav'nly pair.
Happy the heart that thinks of no removes.
Can She Excuse My Wrongs
Can she excuse my wrongs with Virtue’s cloak?
Shall I call her good when she proves unkind?
Are those clear fires which vanish into smoke?
Must I praise the leaves where no fruit I find?
No, no; where shadows do for bodies stand,
That may’st be abus’d if thy sight be dim.
Cold love is like to words written on sand,
Or to bubbles which on the water swim.
Wilt thou be thus abused still,
Seeing that she will right thee never?
If thou canst not o’ercome her will,
Thy love will be thus fruitless ever.
Was I so base, that I might not aspire
Unto those high joys which she holds from me?
As they are high, so high is my desire,
If she this deny, what can granted be?
If she will yield to that which reason is,
It is reason’s will that love should be just.
Dear, make me happy still by granting this,
Or cut off delays if that I die must.
Better a thousand times to die
Than for to love thus still tormented:
Dear, but remember it was I
Who for thy sake did die contented.

All Star (as an English Madrigal)
Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed
She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an "L" on her forehead
Well, the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb
So much to do, so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the backstreets?
You'll never know if you don't go
You'll never shine if you don't glow
Hey now, you're an all star
Get your game on, go play
Hey now, you're a rock star
Get the show on, get paid
(And all that glitters is gold)
Only shootin' stars break the mold
It's a cool place, and they say it gets colder
You're bundled up now, wait 'til you get older
But the meteor men beg to differ
Judging by the hole in the satellite picture
The ice we skate is gettin' pretty thin
The water's gettin' warm so you might as well swim
My world's on fire, how 'bout yours?
That's the way I like it and I'll never get bored

Apple Tree
All of my life I've been hunting
I've been a girl, I've been a boy
Digging my feet into the ground like an apple tree
Wanting to live with a purpose
Skin is a word, love is not a sin
People are bad, people are good
Just like the moon is a stone
But it's a star when it's dark and now she's hiding
If you've seen what a heart is, you've seen its color
If I ever knew how we could guide it
I would take care of its children, become their mother
If I ever knew how we could hide it, hide it
Let her save the world, she is just a girl
Let him save them all, he is just a boy
Let her save the world, she is just a girl
Let him save them all, he is just a boy
Hunger is quiet if you do it right
Hunter is loud and predictable, scaring away every prey
So they're gone before the hunter arrives
Would you be kind and put away your sword?
You cannot cut away what we've got
You cannot kill what we are
We are not here in physical form
You've seen where the knife is, its dark location
If I ever knew how we could guide it
I will cut into our anger, make pure emotion
If I ever knew how we could hide it, hide it
Can you carry the weight of mortality?
The explosions around you is your symphony

Higher Ground
People, keep on learning
Soldiers, keep on warring
World, keep on turning
'Cause it won't be long
Powers keep on lying
While your people keep on dying
World keep on turning
'Cause it won't be long
I'm so glad he let me try it again
'Cause my last time on Earth, I lived a whole world of sin
I'm so glad that I know more than I knew then
Going to keep on trying
'Til I reach the highest ground
Preachers, keep on preaching
Believers, keep on believing
World, keep on turning
'Cause it won't be long
I'm gonna keep on tryin,
till I reach it.
Won't you take me higher, oh my soul.
Cause it won't be long.

You Don't Know Me
I wanna ask you
Do you ever sit and wonder,
It's so strange
That we could be together for
So long, and never know, never care
What goes on in the other one's head?
Things I've felt but I've never said
You said things that I never said
So I'll say something that I should have said long ago:
You don't know me at all
You could have just propped me up on the table like a mannequin
Or a cardboard stand-up and paint me
Any face that you wanted me
To be seen with.
Damned by the existential moment where
We saw the couple in the coma and
It was we were the cliche,
But we carried on anyway.
So, sure, I could just close my eyes.
Yeah, sure, trace and memorize,
But can you go back once you know
You don't know me at all
If I'm the person that you think I am
Clueless chump you seem to think I am
So easily led astray, an errant dog who occasionally
escapes and needs a shorter leash, then
Why the heck would you want me back?
Maybe it's because
You don't know me at all,
So, what I'm trying to say is
I'm trying to tell you
It's not gonna come out
like I wanna say it cause I know
you'll only change it.
You don't know me at all

Seasons of Love (from Rent)
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes
Five hundred twenty-five thousand moments so dear
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure a year?
In daylights, in sunsets
In midnights, in cups of coffee
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife
In five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure a year in the life?
How about love?
Seasons of love
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes
Five hundred twenty-five thousand journeys to plan
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure the life of a woman or a man?
In truths that she learned
Or in times that she cried
In bridges he burned
Or the way that she died
It's time now to sing out
Though the story never ends
Let's celebrate, remember a year
in the life of friends

We Shall Be Known
We shall be known by the company we keep
By the ones who circle round to tend these fires
We shall be known by the ones who sow and reap
The seeds of change, alive from deep within the earth
It is time now, it is time now that we thrive
It is time we lead ourselves into the well
It is time now, and what a time to be alive
In this Great Turning we shall learn to lead in love
