"The event commemorates the announcement of the emancipation of slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865, which was two and a half years after the official Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln. For many years, the African American Cultural Center at ACC has been heading up the programming and logistics for the community-wide Juneteenth celebration.
Juneteenth has historically been celebrated in the Eastside of Austin and it has become a national holiday as of June 17, 2021. All community members are welcomed to the Eastview campus to participate in various activities like dunking tanks, musical performances, outdoor basketball, lawn games, cultural awareness and educational talks, speeches, informational events, and more!
Breaking the chains of slavery and breaking the narratives and stereotypes of Black people have always been the goal for the African American Cultural Center. And, this particular celebration represents the culmination of that work and love for the culture and community, by bringing the public to the campus."
