Blood Smear Evaluation
Making a Blood Smear
CBC Procedure
A CBC includes PCV/TP, a machine automated blood count, and a blood smear evaluation.
Blood Smear Evaluation
1. Examine blood smear under 10x objective
a. Monolayer
i. Even cell distribution
b. Feathered edge
i. Platelet clumps
c. Parasites (microfilaria)
2. Examine blood smear under 40x objective
a. Ensure you are focused in monolayer before moving forward
3. Examine blood smear under 100x objective (oil immersion)
a. WBC differential
i. Count 100 WBC, record each as %
ii. Calculate WBC absolute values using machine automated count (/µL)
b. WBC morphology
i. Normal or neutrophil toxicity changes, reactive lymphocytes
ii. Quantify all abnormalities
c. RBC morphology
i. Note size, color, shape, arrangement, and any inclusion bodies
ii. Quantify all abnormalities
d. Platelet estimate
i. #/oil field
ii. Quantify platelet clumps
