One word at a time.

Austin Speech Labs is a nonprofit organization dedicated to rebuilding lives of stroke survivors by providing speech, language and cognitive therapy. We are looking for student volunteers to assist our speech therapists. Volunteers are provided training and assistance needed to assist with book clubs, podcasts, reading and writing.

In 2008, through the leadership of two speech-language pathologists, we opened our doors to a world of stroke survivors who had the potential to improve their speech but simply did not have the funds or insurance coverage to continue with hospital services. Challenging the traditional belief that survivors have a small window of time to recover after a stroke, we welcomed anyone who had suffered a stroke and had hope for a better life. In doing this, we built a community of courageous survivors, relentless caregivers and compassionate health care providers. Our Result: recovery outcomes that we all thought were impossible - through unique methods we’d never seen. And we haven’t stopped there.

As a volunteer, you'd get to know the client and help them recover their speech and language skills by assisting the speech therapists. We'd pair you with stroke survivors to have conversations, assist in book clubs led by speech therapists, and help stroke survivors name objects and expand their conversation. It is a fun environment, and our clients are successful individuals in our community that lost their ability to communicate verbally due to stroke.

Clinical volunteer shifts are from 9AM - 12PM and  from 1PM - 4PM.

If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out the application below! Upon completion, our volunteer coordinator will be in touch with you.
