Resume Help

Prepare for the Future by Giving Back Today!

Volunteerism and Service-Learning are great ways to enrich your ACC experience, help your local community, and help you plan for the future. Whether you’re thinking about entering the workforce or transferring to a four-year college or university, community engagement experiences can help flesh out your resume. Here are a few tips from resources here at ACC for how to include volunteer opportunities on your resume and transfer applications.

Keep Your End Goal in Mind

No matter what job or program you’re applying for, it is important to showcase skills, commitments, and accomplishments that are relevant to that position on your resume. When looking for volunteer opportunities, make sure that you’re thinking about how that opportunity will help you on your career or academic journey. Volunteer experiences can be a great way to sharpen skills that will serve you in your future endeavors or learn more about a field you’re interested in.

Be Willing to Commit

One of the biggest requests from community partners we receive is to help them find students who are willing to make a commitment to their organizations. Whether it be for a full semester or a year, a long term commitment can not only help you accomplish more during your time with the organization, but also demonstrates loyalty and time management on a resume. Additionally, the long term relationships you develop within the organization could result in letters of recommendation or employment opportunities down the road.

Track Your Engagement

It is never a bad idea to keep a running log of your engagement, as well as some reflections about your experiences and the work you’ve done. Especially if you make a long term commitment, this documentation will help you craft a resume later on that accurately reflects your commitment and contribution to that community organization.
