Kupira Marimba performs traditional Zimbabwean mbira and marimba music on giant hand-built instruments.
The music invites everyone to participate, dance, clap, and be moved!
"If you can walk, you can dance. If you can talk, you can sing"
-Zimbabwean proverb
Austin-based, Kupira Marimba plays high-energy African music on enormous wooden xylophones. Each instrument is hand-built at the Rattletree School of Marimba by Kupira's Artistic Director, Joel Laviolette. Laviolette studied the traditional mbira (thumb piano) music of the Shona people in Zimbabwe for several years, and has been a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live and NPR.
Kupira Marimba takes the ancient music to a new level, playing exciting poly-rhythmic melodies as a marimba orchestra. People of all walks of life are inspired to dance in celebration of life.
