Yu-Hsuan Liao serves as Associate Professor of Music and the Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at Shepherd University in West Virginia. She is a piano soloist, chamber musician, collaborative pianist, and music educator. She has embraced a broad range repertoire from the 16th century to world premieres.
Yu-Hsuan is currently serving as the president for the West Virginia Music Teachers Association, the chair for the WVMTA composition commission, and the faculty advisor for the Music Teacher National Association Shepherd Collegiate Chapter. Her students have frequently presented their research projects in the MTNA Collegiate Chapter Symposium.
She regularly gives master classes and is in high demand for adjudication at festivals and competitions around the West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. region.
A native of Taipei, Taiwan, Yu-Hsuan began her musical studies in Tung-Hai University of Taiwan, under Thomas Linde. She received her Masters and Doctoral Degrees of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from University of Texas at Austin under Danielle Martin, Dariusz Pawlas, and Gregory Allen.
Dr. Wan-Hsuan (Joyce) Wu is an active concert pianist and a dedicated music educator. She enjoys working in diverse environments with students of all levels and backgrounds. As an active solo and collaborative concert pianist, Joyce had appeared on concert stages in Asia, Europe, and North America. She was a founding member of various chamber music groups such as Trio Thallasea and Ensemble Cameranze. In 2022, Joyce co-founded The Woven Sounds, a 501(c)(3) piano duo. Its mission is to promote musical works by classical composers of Asian descent or those inspired by Asian folk tunes through concert performances and educational initiatives.
Dr. Wu currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at the Austin Community College in Austin, TX, providing instructions in Music Appreciation, American Music, and Applied Piano courses. Joyce received both Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in piano performance from The University of Texas at Austin under the guidance of internationally renowned pianist, Professor Nancy Burton Garrett. Her academic interest extended to the musicological field while concentrating on perfecting her performance skills. Dr. Wu researched and completed her doctoral treatise—Beethoven Through Liszt: Myth, Performance, Edition under the supervision of late Dr. K. M. Knittel.
Soprano Yen-Ching Chiu holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Taipei National University of Arts (Taiwan) and a Master of Music degree from Texas State University (USA), where she received a two-year music scholarship under the guidance of Ms. Cheryl Parrish. She is an active member of Music Teachers National Association and Maryland State Music Teacher Association. She constantly serves as judge and competition coordinator in the DC area. In 2023, she relocated with her family to Texas from the greater DC area and served as the choir director at Brentwood Christian School in Austin, TX.
Ms. Chiu has earned recognition for her work as a choir director and a music educator, actively performing in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Her career highlights include serving as choir conductor of the Greater Washington Taiwanese-American Choir and as music director at the Taiwanese American Conference East Coast chapter (TACEC) in 2017 and 2019, respectively. As the founder of the vocal chamber- Voice of Joyce, she led their debut performance at the Taiwanese American Conference East Coast (TACEC) concert in the summer of 2019. In 2024, she expanded her artistic reach as the vocal director for Brentwood Christian School's theater production of Willy Wonka, where showcasing her ability to inspire and elevate student performances in large-scale musical theater.
