Biography
Taiwanese-born pianist Shao-Shan Chen began piano lessons at the age of five. She earned a
Diploma degree in piano performance from the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Santo
Domingo, Dominican Republic; Master of Music degree from The Boston Conservatory; and
Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of
Cincinnati. While in the Dominican Republic, Dr. Chen won numerous first prizes in national
piano competitions. At the age of eighteen, she made her debut as piano soloist with the National
Symphony Orchestra of Santo Domingo performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto K. 466. While at
The Boston Conservatory, she won twice the annual Honor Students Competitions. Dr. Chen has
performed as piano soloist and chamber musician at the Carnegie Recital Hall and the Columbia
Artists Management Inc. (CAMI) Hall in New York, as well as in Boston, Cincinnati, the Aspen
Music Festival, Lafayette, New Orleans, and the South Texas areas. Internationally, she has
performed in France, Taiwan, Indonesia, Spain, Venezuela, and Australia. Last summer, she was
invited to perform a piano recital and teach master classes in Agen, France. As an adjudicator,
Dr. Chen has been invited to adjudicate at competitions, sponsored by Steinway Piano
Competition in San Antonio, South Texas Piano Competition, Singapore Music Teachers
Association, Texas Music Teachers Association, and Corpus Christi Music Teachers
Association. Her teachers include Floralba Del Monte, Michael Lewin, and Frank Weinstock.
Dr. Chen currently serves as Professor of Piano at Del Mar College.
Described as “possesses the utmost in technique, mature musicianship, and intellect” by the New
York Concert Review and “simply incredible” by Corpus Christi’s Caller-Times, pianist David
Sutanto gained his international recognition when he won the 1997 Artists International
Audition in New York, which resulted in his critically acclaimed New York recital debut at the
Carnegie Recital Hall in 1998. Other awards include winner of the 1996 Chopin Foundation
Piano Competition in NY, recipient of the Arthur B. Whitney Award in Boston, and top prize
winner of the National Yamaha Piano Competition in Indonesia, among others.
Dr. Sutanto is an active performer as piano soloist and chamber musician, including performing
as a duo-pianist with his wife, Dr. Shao-Shan Chen. He has performed throughout the United
States (in Boston, New York, Maine, Cincinnati, Aspen, Lafayette, New Orleans, and South
Texas) and abroad (in France, the Dominican Republic, Taiwan, and Indonesia). Orchestral
appearances include soloist with Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra, The Boston Conservatory
Orchestra, College-Conservatory of Music Philharmonia Orchestra, Corpus Christi Chamber
Orchestra, and Del Mar College Concert Band. His playing was also broadcast at the radio
stations WAIF-FM (Cincinnati) and KEDT-FM (Corpus Christi), as well as the KIII-TV station
in Corpus Christi. In addition to performing and teaching, he has frequently served as an
adjudicator for music festivals and competitions, and presented piano master classes in France,
the Dominican Republic, Singapore, and Indonesia. Currently a Professor of Piano at Del Mar
College, Dr. Sutanto received his education from The Boston Conservatory, Manhattan School
of Music, and University of Cincinnati. He has studied with Karminia Bungsu, Jung-Ja Kim,
Donn-Alexandre Feder, and Frank Weinstock.
