The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) is the required state test for English language proficiency (ELP) that must be given to students whose primary language is a language other than English.
The ELPAC is aligned with California’s 2012 English Language Development Standards and is comprised of two separate assessments:
Initial Assessment —an initial identification of students as English learners
Summative Assessment —an annual summative assessment to measure an English learner's progress in learning English and to identify the student's English Language proficiency level

Each spring students participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) testing. These standardized assessments provide important information about instruction and how well each student is progressing towards meeting the California Academic Content Standards. The score reports are posted on the Parent Portal once they become available over the summer.
The Smarter Balanced assessment (SBA) system uses computer-adaptive tests and performance tasks that allow students to show what they know and are able to do. This system is based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics.
Who takes the SBA?
Students in Grades 3-8 and 11 take the SBA tests for English language arts/literacy (ELA) (reading, language, and writing) and mathematics. Students in Grade 5 take the CAST-science assessment and a physical fitness test. Students in Grade 8 & 12 also take the CAST-science assessment.
*Students who have been in the country for less than a year are exempt from taking the ELA portion of the assessments.
