Welcome to kindergarten!
More than just an opportunity for children to socialize and learn about colors and shapes, kindergarten is an important year in the life of your child. My goal as your child's teacher is to provide developmentally-appropriate learning opportunities and encourage social interaction and playtime. Students in kindergarten acquire early educational skills so that they're not only ready -- but also excited -- to move on to first grade. Children within this age group are like little "sponges". They love learning, and are eager to do so. Preserving this mindset is essential .
What can you do to help your child be ready for kindergarten?
Read daily and talk about books; take trips to the public library.
Limit screen time: play games, do puzzles and encourage your child to use their imagination.
Be active outside: socialize with other children-problem solve, share, take turns, use polite words.
Be crafty-use crayons, scissors and glue.
Work on letters, sounds and numbers.
Help them become independent and self sufficient.
My name is Julie Jilizian and I have been teaching for 33 years! I grew up in Glendale and live in Montrose, just west of Pasadena. After high school, I received my Bachelor's degree and credential from Loyola Marymount University and my Masters in Elementary Education from Grand Canyon University. My career started at a private school in the valley and continued in Arcadia. This will be my 29th year at Hugo Reid and my 15th year in kindergarten. I taught 2nd and 3rd grade for 14 years at the big school.
My husband and I celebrated our 28th anniversary this summer. We have two sons who grew up playing sports, mostly baseball, for many years. We are Dodger fans and spend a lot of time cooking together. Our boys are adults now, Alex is 26 and Jake is 24. Both graduated from college, live in California, and are working on their careers.
We enjoy the beach, taking long walks and trying new restaurants. Our favorite restaurants are Mercado and Nick's in Pasadena. You can find me shopping at Amazon, Starbucks, Trader Joe's, Target, and Nordstrom. My husband is also a teacher and the head coach at Glendale Community College (men's basketball) so I attend all of his games throughout the season.
I look forward to getting to know you and your family this year!
