College Prep/Labs

College Prep

Block Days- 10-10:25a

On Tuesday and Wednesday the high school students have an College and Career period and a Lab Time. The College/ Career Prep period is used for teachers to deliver a curriculum that is developed by our counseling department and includes topics such as leadership, character education, life choices after high school, study skills, and other important social development topics. The goal is to help students figure out who they are, where they’re headed, and how they’re going to get there. Through this system, each student has an adult who knows them and helps them navigate high school so that they leave with a meaningful, personalized plan and are prepared for post secondary options.

The College/ Career Prep class is a key component of a distributed student guidance strategy that includes regular meetings between an advisor and a group of students, that meets at regular intervals, has a clear focus, and is something in which all students and staff participate in.

LABS

Block Days- 10:30-11:10a

The overall purpose of Lab time is to offer students an opportunity to seek additional help in needed subjects and provide additional time with teachers. Lab time is also when students who need additional remediation will receive assistance. In addition, Lab time is also when students who are working on credit recovery will meet with their teacher. This time can also be used for exam study groups, additional class time for Advanced Placement classes, and/or additional class time for projects. The overarching goals of lab time include providing increased course enrichment, reduce stress and performance anxiety, and increase teacher/student contact time. Moreover, if a student does not need to use this time for themselves, they can volunteer their time by tutoring for their peers. This would offer them an opportunity to earn service learning hours under the supervision of a supervising teacher within school hours.

Assigned Lab Time: Some students will be assigned specific lab time based on the following criteria:

  • MAP data at 35th percentile of below (grade 9/ 10)

  • Failing course grade

  • SST

  • Conditional Enrollment
