Purpose
This group can be composed of parents, teachers, community members, and any who feel strongly that students who are considered to be ELD have an ideal learning environment. They will evaluate programs, student data, and work with the School Site Council and staff to create/support the Single School Plan for Student Achievement.
The committee advises and assists the school principal, staff and School Site Council (SSC) as follows:
The school’s program for ELD students
The development of the Single School plan for student achievement
Efforts to make parents aware of the importance of regular school attendance
The school’s needs assessment
The school’s annual language census
Efforts to make parents aware of the importance of regular school attendance
Composition Requirements
The percentage of parents of English learners on the committee must be at least the same as that of English learners at the school. Ideally, we will have at least 4 parents from the community, an administrator, teacher, student, and counselor at every one of the 4 ELAC meetings.
Elections
Requirements for ELAC Elections (assuming there are enough individuals interested such that a vote is necessary) include:
Parents/guardians of English learners elect parent members of the school committee
The parents/guardians are provided the opportunity to vote for committee members
Each school committee shall have the opportunity to elect at least one member to the district English learner advisory committee (DELAC)
Training
The district shall provide for all ELAC members necessary materials and training to support their advisory role
