COOL FACT!
The Native American tribes coined this supermoon the "Sturgeon moon" because Sturgeon (fish) was mostly caught during this month in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain.
✭ Orbit/ Revolution: approximately 27.3 days
Fun fact: Our months are based on the moon's orbit
✭ A supermoon is a phenomenon where the moon appears brighter and bigger
✭ Occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its orbit (also known as pedigree)
Fun fact: A supermoon can look 14% to 30% bigger than average
✭The moon rises approximately 50 minutes later each day in the sky
✭ Thats why the moon appears during the day sometimes!
Understanding the Moon: In depth
✰ What are those dark spots on the moon?
Known as Lunar Maria (sea in Latin), these spots were created due to volcanic eruptions that filled the moon's craters/basins with basaltic magma
✰ Why does the moon have phases?
Only half of the moon is lit by sunlight due to tidal locking. Depending on where the moon is in its orbit, you will see a portion of the moon (moon phase) from Earth. A great website to simulate this is PBS Learning Simulator↓
