What is AVID?
Advancement Via Individual Determination, AVID, is a seventh through twelfth grade program that prepares students in the academic middle for admission to a four-year college or university. Students are taught study skills, note-taking, time management, writing and research skills, while being immersed in a college-going culture. The class also includes tutoring sessions that are led by college students and provide support for success in the academically rigorous curriculum. Additionally, the AVID class provides access to information about colleges and universities through field trips, guest speakers, college tutors, scholarship opportunities and college admission requirement information.

Students targeted for the class:

- Are in the academic middle or high achieving
- First generation college-bound
- Are historically under-represented in the world of higher education
- Are motivated and determined to do well
- Able to work with others
- Willing to work hard
- Would benefit from academic and organizational skill development
What we do in AVID...
What we do in AVID...
- Students will explore different college and careers through guest speakers, special projects and collaborative activities.
- We are never quiet in AVID, because we believe learning happens by talking, asking questions and learning from each other. When you come into AVID, you will HEAR and SEE learning taking place!
- Students will gain their “college knowledge” in the realm of: note-taking skills, organizations, peer tutoring and the steps it takes to be admitted to university.
- College tutors are in the class 3 days a week to help with hands on tutoring from core classes. Students work collaboratively in small groups and share what they are learning.
- We take field trips to colleges and cultural trips- either virtually or in person!
- We believe in fun and team-building! Fun Fridays are ways we can build trust, strengthen the bond in our AVID family and refine our problem-solving skills!
How do I get into the class?

Fill out the Google Form Application on the AVID Application page and submit it.
Write a writing sample on the AVID Application page and submit it.
Ask your teacher to fill out the Teacher Recommendation on the AVID App. page and submit it to Mrs. Guerrero separately at: guerrero_h@auhsd.us
When you sign up for classes, make AVID your first selection. This will help counselors understand that you are really serious about taking the class!
