Retro_Tech Museum 2016
This year’s Teen Tech Week took place during AUHSD’s spring break. We celebrated the occasion after the fact with a Retro-Tech Museum. Faculty scavenged through their classrooms and closets at home for old gadgets and wizmots that could be put on display. During the week of March 28 to April 1, students examined extinct technology in the library.
Museum visitors were also invited to guess the names of each item on display. Submissions with 100% accuracy became eligible for a prize opportunity. Congrats to Nicholus Crooks, this year’s Retro-Tech Museum Challenge Winner!
Some of the most popular 2016 museum pieces included a hand crank generator, an electric typewriter, and a Palm Pilot. The hardest item to for library staff to identify was the Geissler Tube Rotator. Want to see everything that was on display? Click HERE. Thanks to all AH Faculty for sharing your extinct technology with the library!
Tinker Time!
On Monday, March 28, the Anaheim HS Library hosted a Tinker Table Makerspace Event. Attendees were invited to disassemble old computer keyboards. Armed with flathead and phillips screwdrivers, the dismantling began. Plastic backs were removed to reveal the rubber dome switches and thin, plastic circuitry within. Then, the key-popping commenced.
Once the computer keys had been enthusiastically popped out, a few brave souls transferred to the second tinker table station at which they created key chains from the discarded computer keys. (Get it? KEY chains from computer KEYS?)
District Librarian Regina Powers demonstrated how to drill the holes. Fishing wire was used to string them together. Using old parts to create something new and useful is called upcycling. Special thanks to Mr. Cates Woodshop for generously providing all the tools for the library’s Tinker Table. We “tink” you’re great.

Kaleidocycle Makerspace
On Tuesday, January 26th, students dropped by the library to create their own 3-dimensional kaleidocycles out of paper.
Here are some fun facts the District Librarian Mrs. Powers shared with participants:
