FFA students working their market lambs after school.
Mr. Byxbe hosted our final Site Council Meeting of the year at West Valley High School. The meeting included a guided campus tour that allowed parents, local business owners, and community members to see the great resources available to our students. There were stops all throughout the school, including the indoor batting cages, the new CTE construction course, welding, and the PAC, where a live FFA meeting took place and students voted on their next officer team.
The group also toured the school's Barn, where FFA students worked with their market lambs on showmanship and showing off fair projects. Many guests were surprised by some of the facilities and programs they hadn't seen before.
During the tour, there was a great conversation about upcoming improvements and ideas for future changes. Some of the school's history was also shared, helping connect the past with the plans ahead.
It was a great way to engage the community, and there's strong interest in offering a campus tour like this once a year.
West Valley High School's 2025 Prom, themed The Great Gatsby, was a memorable evening for students. It was held at the beautiful Mercy Oaks venue in Redding. The event was a great success, with many students sharing that it was the best prom they had attended in years.
Thanks to the hard work and collaboration led by Mrs. Sprague and a dedicated team of faculty members, the night was filled with style, celebration, and lasting memories. We are grateful for the staff's efforts in creating such a special student experience.
Mrs. Reyher’s Ceramics class has partnered with Mrs. Nibert’s 1st-grade class at North Cottonwood Elementary for a special creative project. High school students are transforming the first graders’ monster drawings into three-dimensional sculptures — a surprise for the young artists!
The sculptures will be delivered on May 19th during first period. Mr. Byxbe, Mrs. Reyher, and participating students will visit North Cottonwood to personally hand over the completed monsters.
This project has been a fun and meaningful collaboration between schools, highlighting creativity, connection, and community spirit.
West Valley High School's Culinary Program, led by Mrs. Smith, was recently highlighted by Redding Buzz for its long-standing excellence. For over 30 years, Mrs. Smith has developed a comprehensive four-tier program that begins with culinary basics and progresses to advanced skills, including a full catering course. The article praised our students' professionalism, creativity, and pride — and noted how staff look forward to the Friday lunches they prepare each week.
Tomorrow, May 2nd, our culinary students will compete against Anderson Union High School in a head-to-head culinary showdown. Fifteen students from each school will showcase their skills in a friendly competition for bragging rights. Redding Buzz will be on-site covering the event and cheering on the incredible student talent.
We're proud of the program's impact and look forward to seeing our students shine!
Nine West Valley High School students had the opportunity to participate in the 2025 NatureBridge trip to Yosemite National Park—a five-day immersive outdoor education program focused on environmental science and stewardship. This unforgettable experience is hosted by NatureBridge, a nonprofit partner of the National Park Service since 1971. It is made possible through full sponsorship by The McConnell Foundation for North State high school students.
Students explored the natural wonders of Yosemite while engaging in hands-on science, leadership development, and environmental awareness. To qualify, each participant completed at least 8 hours of community service centered around environmental impact— from volunteering at the Shasta Wildlife Refuge and Turtle Bay Exploration Park to starting recycling initiatives at their schools.
Accompanied by adult chaperones from participating schools, our West Valley students represented our community with enthusiasm and curiosity.

Mrs. Gulden's Freshman Honors English class had the exciting opportunity to showcase their creativity through a Shark Tank-style project. Working in teams, students developed original product ideas, created visual presentations, and pitched them to a panel of "Sharks" comprised of upper-classmen and teachers. As part of the project, students also designed their own mock websites to promote their products.
Innovative ideas ranged from an AI-powered app that creates outfits from your existing wardrobe to the SmartBin—a self-sealing trash can, to The Spotter—a gym tool that catches the bar during weightlifting fatigue, and even a customizable cookie cutter that can be molded into any shape.
It was a pleasure to witness these young innovators think critically, present confidently, and negotiate with their Sharks to secure investment in their creative solutions.

Our April Chapter Meeting, which was held on the 28th, featured officer interviews and elections for next year’s leadership team. Each of the nine candidates responded to a question in front of the chapter members before voting took place. Members who participated in voting were treated to cookies as a thank-you. Best of luck to all nine candidates—we’re proud of their leadership and commitment to our chapter!
Looking to spruce up your garden this season? Stop by the West Valley Farm this weekend to pick up everything you need! Our dedicated FFA members have been working diligently to prepare various healthy, ready-to-plant garden starts. Thank you to our hardworking students for making this possible! 🪴
In Ms. Bowerman's Agriculture Chemistry class, students are partnering with our Greenhouse Managers, Zoey, and Kenna, to grow healthy plants for our annual plant sale. Meanwhile, Mrs. Gibson's Environmental Science students are starting an exciting new project—growing their plants to cultivate in dedicated garden boxes at the farm. This hands-on experience is a valuable opportunity for students to learn about gardening, sustainability, and plant science.
