An Interactive Display of Diversity
In an effort to visually reflect the cultural diversity embedded within the community at Augustana College, we chose to use the materials at our disposal as students of ART-377 and give our community the opportunity to showcase their travels as well as their heritage. This purpose became increasingly important to us because of how heavily Augustana advertises its statistics and testimonies regarding international and domestic students who come from a variety of cultural backgrounds. We felt that this unique component of the character of Augustana can at times be taken for granted, and wanted to remind the community of how integral it is, especially because diversity is being quietly silenced in many parts of the United States currently.
It is during periods such as the present that we must remind ourselves of the benefits that a diverse community can create. This project served to celebrate our vikings that have embraced cultures different from their own as well as those vikings that have chosen to share theirs with their newfound community.
Through these colorful strands of yarn, we began to understand just how far our community’s reach truly is across the globe. Though this project is technically complete, we hope that the representation of Augustana Vikings’ places of origin or heritage only grows as time passes.
