About Us

Rebecca Garbe

A senior at Augustana College, Rebecca studies Anthropology and French and intends to pursue a graduate program in Anthropology in the coming years. She is a part of the Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble and helps lead French Table on campus. First exploring Native American politics on campus while taking introductory anthropology courses, her involvement was solidified in Dr. Jane Simonsen's Public History class in which she had the chance to write a mock proposal with peers to improve the college's representation of Indigenous communities. Her focus expanded while taking Dr. Adam Kaul's Native North America class, where she focused her research on Native American Studies and the possibility of creating such a program on Augustana's campus.

Madeline Young

Madeline Young is a sophomore at Augustana College studying Anthropology and Classical Studies. On campus, she is involved in SAGA, the literary and arts magazine, and the Augustana Local Agriculture Society. She first got interested in Native American topics in Dr. Adam Kaul's Native North America class, where she focused her research on Vine Deloria Jr., his time spent at Augustana College, and the work that he did for Native Americans in his lifetime. She continued on by taking Dr. Meg DuBray's Political Ecology of the Land class, where she learned more about how the land we live on has a storied past that has been shaped and influenced by our relationships with Native peoples.

Maria Wood

Maria Wood is a junior at Augustana College studying Spanish and History. She is involved with Spanish Club, Buhos, Lives of the Mind Podcast, and the Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble. Native American topics have always interested her, and she began exploring these issues more in depth in Dr. Adam Kaul's Native North America class where she researched contemporary Meskwaki art and artists. She then continued this with Dr. Jane Simonsen's Public History course where she continued researching local indigenous history, and how institutions can actively help decolonize their lands.
