Green Wing

Environmental Laboratory

Green Wing Environmental Laboratory (15 acres; 80 miles to the east of campus) is made up of open field habitat with patchy wood lots and a stream--Iron Side Creek--and is equipped with two buildings that can accommodate college groups of about 20 persons for 1-day excursions and overnight trips.

Under the direction of Dr.'s Michael Reisner and Matthew Fockler, students enrolled in the special topics environmental studies course, ENVR380, prepared for field work in The Lodge, Green Wing's largest facility with a large living room and circular fire place, full kitchen, restrooms, bedrooms, and workshop. (12 Sept 2016)

Green Wing has two houses on site, The Lodge and Canteen. The Lodge is the largest of the two houses and has a large living room with circular fire place (for teaching, meals, and relaxing), full kitchen, men's and women's bathrooms, two bedrooms (each can sleep 3-4 adults), and a workshop/laboratory. The Canteen has two bedrooms situated with bunk bedding and each room can sleep 6 adults, for a total of 12 adults, but lacks kitchen and restroom facilities. Both buildings are heated and air conditioned as needed throughout the year. Below are pictures of each building and some building features.

Green Wing is adjacent to Gremel Wildlife Sanctuary (400 acres of upland forest and wetland habitats) and roughly 1 mile from Amboy Marsh Nature Preserve (a 300 acre wetland complex with black oak sand savannas, sedge meadows and dry sand prairie); both sites are owned and managed by the Illinois Audubon Society. Green Wing could serve as the home base for outdoor study, exploration, and inspiration at Gremel and Amboy Marsh.
