Intensive Orientation Seminar in Cuernavaca
We will begin the semester with an intensive week-long orientation seminar starting in Cuernavaca on the evening of Fri., Jan. 21. Throughout the weekend and following week, you will be introduced to Mexican history and cultures and spend lots of time getting to know the other students and faculty and staff. This is essential to the construction of a healthy living/learning environment. You will also be introduced to some of the key issues that you will be studying throughout the rest of the semester.

Important Semester Dates
Please note that this calendar is subject to changes. If we have to make significant changes, we will update this online calendar and also send it to you. What we know WON’T change at all are the starting and ending dates, holidays, and your spring break dates. Other program components are subject to change.
Fri, January 21: Arrival at Mexico City airport or Cuernavaca airport by 4:00pm. If you need to arrive the day before, you may stay in our facilities overnight for free. However, please contact us at anderso4@augsburg.edu and cgeemexico@augsburg.edu to make arrangements.
January 21 - 30: Orientation in and around Cuernavaca. Because all of our classes are experiential, the guest speakers, excursions and group activities this week will count as an essential part of your courses.
Sat., January 29: Start of nearly semester-long homestays for those who choose to live in local homes for most of the semester, with the exception of program-related travel. You will participate in a homestay orientation session earlier in the week. You will also participate in a getting-acquainted session and lunch with your new host families from 12-3pm on Saturday and then move into your new home at 3pm. (Be sure to submit your Housing Survey & Homestay Survey by December 1.)
Mon, January 31: First day of intensive 5-week Spanish courses. The 5-week intensive Spanish courses (Mondays-Thursdays, 8-10:50am) enable beginning and intermediate students to take more than one Spanish course during the semester since the Spanish courses are taken consecutively. For students who are only taking one Spanish course, you will only have four courses left after your Spanish course ends, so your workload will reduce. Please note that if you are completing an internship or SWK fieldwork, it will be more difficult to take two or more Spanish classes unless you come for an intensive course on your own from Dec. 30-Jan. 17. In general, SWK students are not able to take more than one Spanish course during the semester due to their other course requirements.
Feb 3: The last day to add a class (including changing a Spanish course level).
Feb 5 - 7: 3-day weekend for Mexican Constitution Day Holiday.
Feb 11: Last day to drop a class without “Withdrawal" notation on transcript.
Feb. 15 - May 12: SPA-ART 231 course (Tuesdays and Thursdays, plus Saturday excursions TBA).
Feb 18 - 23: “Deep Dive” Rural seminar and home stay in the Nahua indigenous village Amatlan de Quetzalcoatl.
Fri., Mar 4: Start of urban home stay for those of you who choose to live in Casa Augsburg for the first 6 weeks of the semester. (Be sure to complete and submit your Housing Survey and Homestay Survey by Dec. 1.)
Thurs, Mar 10: The last day of your first or only intensive Spanish course.
March 11 - 14: SPRING BREAK: 4-day weekend related to Benito Juarez Holiday. Please note that if you want to travel outside of Cuernavaca, this is the best time to do so because the next 4-day weekend is when all Mexican schools are on vacation, and so tourist destinations will be crowded. To avoid possible COVID-19 contagion, we urge that you NOT plan to travel to popular tourist destinations (such as beaches) during the break in April.
Mar 15: Second Spanish Class Starts for those who are taking more than one Spanish course.
Mar 22: Last day to withdraw from a class (“W” will appear on transcript)
Apr 8: End of Urban Homestay unless you have requested to stay in your local home until the end of the semester.
Apr 14 - 17: 4-day weekend related to Mexican "Semana Santa" (Holy Week) holidays. Please note that if you want to travel outside of Cuernavaca, we recommend that you plan on doing that during your Spring Break from March 11-14 rather than now. April 14-17 falls within the period when all Mexican schools are on vacation, and so tourist destinations will be crowded. To avoid possible COVID-19 contagion, we urge that you NOT plan to travel to popular tourist destinations (such as beaches) during the break in April. If you want to go to Mexico City for this weekend, that is a good option since many people leave Mexico City during these holidays. Otherwise, the International Resident Assistant and other staff will plan optional fun day-trips with you during this long weekend.
Apr 18 - 22: Educational seminar in Mexico City.
Social Work Students: Seminar at the National School of Social Work at the UNAM in Mexico City.
All other students: Interdisciplinary educational seminar in Mexico City.
April 25-29: UNAM Social Work students participate in an intensive week-long seminar in Cuernavaca with the CGEE Social Work students (Week #2 of the 2-week UNAM Social Work exchange).
Sat., May 7 - Sun., May 8 ART-SPA 231 course overnight excursion in Mexico City with Maestra Mayari Hernandez Tamayo
Fri, May 13: Last day of program; activities will end by 6:00pm.
Sat, May 14: Day to pack and say goodbye to people.
Sun, May 15: Last meal provided at breakfast. Students depart for home or for independent travel within Mexico. Rides to the airport will be provided on this day if there are enough people to warrant sending a van. Otherwise, we will provide a direct bus ticket to the airport for whichever day you are traveling.
