Communication between the United States and Cuba can be a bit challenging. You will have a very different experience with internet and phones while in Cuba. We encourage you to take this program as a time to unplug from your phone as much as possible.
Wifi: You will have a connection to wi-fi at your lodging in MLKMC and will be given 2 hours of free access. If you’d like more access it is 25 Cuban pesos (around 10 cents USD) per hour. You will likely have time in the mornings and evenings and this will be when you can send messages or call loved ones back home using Whatsapp or other services that work through an internet connection (Facebook Messenger, Facetime, etc). Please note this internet access will be much slower than what you are used to and you will likely not be able to use streaming. Access may be spotty.
Phones: Check with your phone carrier to see if they offer any international plans or roaming in Cuba. (AT&T and Sprint seem to have some options). Most companies do not due to U.S. sanctions.
We encourage you to download the free and secure app Whatsapp to be able to communicate with loved ones via a wifi connection. Also, consider downloading the free map app maps.me. You can download the map of Havana prior to traveling to have access to streets and locations without a wifi connection.
In case of an emergency, please see the CGEE Emergency Phone Line below that your loved ones can use to get ahold of you. Additionally, friends and family may be able to place a direct-dial call to you. Before your departure, CGEE will provide you with direct-dial emergency numbers for the places you will be staying. However, many of the accommodations CGEE uses do not have phones in the rooms, and operators may only speak Spanish.
