MSWp, MSW or MSCL?

How do you choose which programme?

A common question facing some students is what programme they should choose.

Social work is a broad discipline that touches on many areas, including those that intersect with social and community leadership. However, at a training level there are some key distinctions that separate the programmes.

You should choose an MSWp (Masters of Social Work Professional) programme if you are seeking a training that will produce social change by supporting you to do advanced case-work and one-on-one interventions with individuals. The MSWp training will also touch on social policy responses, and on organisations and management, however the practicum components of these programmes predominantly focus on case-work.

You should choose an MSW if you have a BSW or BSW (Hons) and are seeking further extension that will include a 120 point masters thesis project investigating a research topic in more depth.

You should choose an MSCL (Masters of Social and Community Leadership) if you want to produce social change by making organisations more effective in how they lead, deliver, and facilitate social change. You would choose this training if you are seeking a training that would improve your leadership skills and qualities, and that would equip you with knowledge of designing interventions that produce social change at a broader level (e.g., for groups of people, or communities, rather than at the individual level that is the focus for an MSWp). This programme will train you to use principles from Human Centered Design, Social Innovation, and Evaluation, to identify, assess, and produce interventions and solutions to pressing social problems. We have a wide range of students in our programme and taking our courses, ranging from fresh undergraduates to senior leaders in social and community settings. You may be interested in this programme if you...

  • are coming from undergraduate study (around a quarter of the students currently are) and want to develop deeper knowledge of working in this exciting area of social and community change and leadership,
  • already have a social work qualification (around a third of the students currently are) and want to develop leadership and/or programme design and evaluation skills and competencies.
  • are already working in the social and community, health or education sectors (around three quarters of the students currently are) and are looking to step up in leadership or programme design and evaluation.

Please review the current slide deck on the programme which details the sorts of roles and students involved in the programme to date.
