How do I enrol for an MSc (research thesis) in Physics?

You must:

  • have a Major in physics, with a GPA of 5.0 in 75 points above Stage II, including at least 45 points in Physics.

Then:

  • Complete the BSc(Hons) or PGDipSci in Physics (see Dr David Krofcheck d.krofcheck@auckland.ac.nz for advice): taught courses from 701-781 as available OR enrol in the 240 point research MSc directly, involving the same year of taught courses. Up to 45 points of the taught courses for the taught MSc can be from MATHS 761-763 or GEOPHYS 761-780.
  • Find a supervisor for the research thesis component (120 pts) of the degree. You want to allow enough time to talk to them about the proposed project, think a little about the skills you will pick up and how this fits with your own goals.
  • Complete the Supervisor Selection Form and submit it to the 6th floor office. It is not required that you list three potential supervisors, but we do encourage you to have a chat to more than one person while making your decision.
  • Enrol in PHYSICS 796 A/B (60 pts each) (or X/Y if applicable).

How do I go about finding a supervisor?

  • Go talk to potential supervisors. It's really the only way to get started. Now is good.
  • When you have a research supervisor confirmed, it is a really good idea to let me know (Email: n.gaston@auckland.ac.nz).

How do I get an extension?

If you are getting close to the due date (typically 28 February if you started at the beginning of semester I) and are worried about completing on time, the first thing to do is to talk to your supervisor about your concerns. Then:

  • If they agree that you need a short (maximum 2 week) extension, contact me and ask your supervisor to write an email in support. This should ONLY be done if they have cause to believe that the extension will enable you to hand in a qualitatively different thesis, that is of a markedly improved quality.
  • If the required extension is longer than 2 weeks, the application for an extension needs to be completed. This requires an explanation of the need for the extension, medical certificates of other supporting evidence. Your supervisor and the HoD need to sign this.
  • For this longer extension, tuition fees are payable at the rate of 10 points for each two-month period or part thereof. Therefore the grounds for this extension, and the benefit of it, should be well thought through.
