Research
My research attempts to address the challenge posed by Max Born to younger generations, “I have restricted my work to ideal crystals though I am aware that the theory of the defects in real crystals is practically far more important. This I have left to a younger generation.” To that end, I employ techniques of computer simulation of materials to understand and design the thermodynamic and kinetic response of defective materials to external stimuli such as temperature, stress, electromagnetic field and chemical potential. We study inorganic crystalline and amorphous solids, water, and also biological molecules such as proteins and lipids. The purpose is twofold; advancing our fundamental understanding of materials science and engineering, and improving the performance of various technologies/materials such as solar cells, semiconductor devices, computer memories, and corrosion-resistant alloys, cements, and drugs.

Nada is studying the inhibition of glycogen synthase kinase (GSK3β) which was found to be associated with multiple psychiatric, neuroinflammation, and neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer`s disease. The research aims at constructing a work flow for drug repurposing employing a combination of molecular docking and molecular dynamics.

Karim is working on studying polymorphism in drug crystals using a combination of force field and density functional theory methods. The goal of this research is to develop a computational capability to predict phase transitions of a particular drug under the action of temperature and mechanical stresses. This can inform drug processing techniques about the key parameters needed to produce bioavailable tablets.
