The girls varsity soccer team had an outstanding season. They led the district in goals and broke records. With their struggles and successes, it gained them the title.
The team ended with a record of 7-1, making them co-champions with North Tapps Middle School. The team had a total of 64 goals and 34 assists. The captains were eighth-graders Raelene Gilreath and Krystal Cordero-Lopez.
“[How was the season] excellent! I think we had a pretty good team this year. I know that at the beginning of the season we didn’t know who we would have, and we had some extra people step up and fill in the spots that were needed,” Gilreath said. “And I think it definitely turned out to be one of the best seasons. There was chaos, but it was fun.”
As the season went on, the team had to make some adjustments to make sure everything went smoothly. Such as passing, defending, finishing, communication, and teamwork.
“I feel like our teamwork improved a lot,” sixth-grader Leira Fenton said. “So it was much easier to work together. Which helps us score goals faster.”
But, in their third game, they had to face their most difficult competitor, North Tapps. North Tapps were undefeated at the time, and so was Mt. Baker. Whoever won that game would be in first place. The final was 2-3. North Tapps won, making Mt. Baker’s record 2-1.
“[The most difficult game was] Tapps because many of them play for clubs. So they have a lot of experience,” Cordero-Lopez said. “The game was also on their field, which was on grass. Many of them were tall and were always trying to get the ball no matter what. They were super aggressive. But we all tried our best and kept our heads up.”
In the fifth game, they faced North Tapps again, and ended in Mt. Baker’s favor. The final was 4-3, Mt. Baker won. At the time, both Mt. Bakers’ and North Tapps' records were 4-1.
At the end of the season, Mt. Baker’s record was 7-1. But, two records were broken and one tied. Cordero Lopez broke the record for career points with 96 points, the record for career goals with 39, and tied the record for goals in a single season with 24.
With the season ended, a few players wished some things could’ve changed or gone different. For example, outcomes of games, goals, or number of players.
“What I wanted to change was probably our defense. Maybe we would’ve fixed our stances and not dive to the ball with the wrong foot,” seventh-grader Cinthya Marquez said.
