Throughout the past school year, teachers and administrators have been getting annoyed about how much students complain about being tired or how little they slept the night before.
Auburn School District Administrators have created a new district wide rule stating that all schools within the Auburn School District must have a mandatory thirty minute nap time during the school day.
“I really like this new nap time rule because I am in many after school activities such as track and Aviation Club, and I always feel tired from those," sixth-grader John Chalmers said. "I think nap time helps many students and it gives teachers a time to relax.”
This new nap time varies between schools. In many middle schools nap time is after lunch which can range between grades.
“Our nap time is right after lunch, which is 11:10-11:40 AM, but I think that time is just for eighth-graders,” eighth-grader Johnny Deep said.
Most students enjoy the nap time that is newly added, others may have mixed opinions about it.
“I don't like this nap time, it's so pointless," seventh-grader Swift Taylor said. "I just want to get the day over with and not have to take a break. It also makes the school day longer which is such a major downside.”
The nap time mainly affects students, but teachers and administrators have opinions about it too.
“Since the nap time only benefits students, I don’t really like the new rule. I am the counselor for eighth-graders so I am not teaching in a classroom everyday," eighth-grade counselor Mr. Parcy said. "I can’t imagine how hard it might be for teachers to not accidentally doze off when all the students are asleep. I know if it were me, I wouldn’t be able to control myself and students might have to wake me up!”
This new nap time has been difficult for some teachers. Many students have reported their teachers dozing off during nap time.
“I was in math class the other day and it was time to nap," Chalmers said. "The alarm went off for us to wake up and my math teacher had fallen asleep and we had to try and wake him up for over ten minutes.”
Teachers are starting to get worried of their job being at risk because of accidentally dozing off. Many teachers have been trying to ban the new nap time because of their jobs being at risk.
“The new nap time rule doesn’t consider the teacher's feelings at all, this new rule is only for students," wood shop teacher Mr. Woody said. "Teachers make sure students learn everything they need to day after day so everyone is well educated. We all deserve a break as well.”
There are many downsides to the mandatory nap time but it benefits many students and teachers as well.
“I have teachers and friends that complain about the new rule, but I think it has its perks," eighth-grader The Weekday said. "I like being able to take a break during the school day to unwind and I think it gives teachers time to do work they might not get to do during the other hours of the day..”
