pathway to teaching
Are you interested in becoming a teacher in Washington State but are not yet certified?
Auburn School District must uphold requirements outlined in RCW 28A.410.025 that all teachers must hold a valid Washington State teaching certificate or permit issued by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI)'s certification office.
ROUTES TO CERTIFICATION
There are three (3) main pathways to certification: Traditional, Alternative Route, and CTE
Traditional
New to teaching
The traditional teacher preparation programs:
Results in a Washington State certification
Places an emphasis on theory and pedagogy across content areas
Requires no prior experience
Takes one or more years for completion (dependent on program and any prior degree(s))
Typically more expensive than the other pathways
Contact OSPI’s Certification Office for questions about your individual situation to see if you are eligible or steps you need to take or to start your application.
out-of-state teachers
If you possess a teaching license from a different state and wish to obtain certification in Washington, you must submit an application directly to the OSPI Certification Office. It is advisable to initiate this procedure well in advance to guarantee the issuance of a valid certificate before your employment commences.
To learn about the alignment of your out-of-state endorsements with Washington State endorsements and find information on required testing equivalency, visit the OSPI's resource page on Out-of-State Applicants.
alternative route
what are alt-routes?
Alternative routes are designed for people already working in education (or career changers) who want to earn a teaching certificate. These pathways allow for candidates to complete their program as part of their degree and are generally shorter, more flexible, and affordable than a traditional route.
THE FOUR ROUTES
Route 1: For district staff such as paraeducators, that hold an associate's degree
Route 2: For district staff with a bachelor's degree
Route 3: For "career changers" with a bachelor's degree
Route 4: For district staff with a bachelor's degree and a limited certificate

career and technical education (cte)
teaching in cte
The CTE route is:
Is less formal than traditional teacher preparation programs
Generally takes one year
Typically costs less
Requires relevant career experience
Results in CTE certificate
Offers certifications in career and technical fields
For more information about CTE Certification, please visit OSPI's Career and Technical Applicants page.
