Welcome to Advanced Algebra 1.

New textbook this year.  You will get access to a digital copy on your chromebook.  An actual textbook will be available in class only.

Calculators can also be checked out through the library.  I have a limited supply of calculators that I only loan out during tests.

You will not be allowed to use a smartphone calculator during tests.  So you will need a calculator.

We will cover the following 1st semester:

Catalog Course Description:  

OPEN TO: 10, 11, 12 Full Year Course.

PREREQUISITE: Teacher’s signature.  Recommend a “C” grade in Algebra 1&2, and Geometry 1&2.  Require passing first semester to remain in the class second semester.

Advanced Algebra topics are presented and include: discrete math, equations and inequalities, functions and their roots, conic sections, logarithms, and trigonometry. Graphing calculator skills are taught and applied to problem solving.

Auburn School District uses adopted math curriculum in accordance with Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements and Competency-Based Admissions Standards to prepare students for success in high school and beyond.  Materials, lessons, and activities are carefully selected to support student learning, measure achievement, and demonstrate competence in math, technical writing, and technical skills.  Special effort is taken to assure students are meeting benchmarks through demonstration, application,and communication of knowledge as part of their course grade.  In addition, commitment to quality, work habits, communication, citizenship, attendance and punctuality are considered essential components of the course grade. 

Grading:  

Your grades are on the following weighted categories.

21 Century Skills:  Work/student skills (5% of overall grade)

Daily Work: Math Journal & Classwork (15% of overall grade)

Assessments: Quizzes, Tests, Projects & Comprehensive Exams (80% of overall grade)

You will be expected to do quality work at all times.

21 Century Skills:

You will need to attend class regularly to participate in discussions, note taking, completion of example problems, homework assignments and concept projects.  Class activities may or may not be made up, depending on the assignment.  If you are absent, you risk missing out on important and relevant classroom instruction, discussion and example problems.  You are expected to complete the assigned homework promptly.

Daily Work:

Homework:  Homework will be due one school day after being assigned.  Homework will be checked for showing progress and showing work.  All homework assigned for a Unit will be assembled in a math journal and will be turned in periodically for scoringLate homework will lose 20-30% of its point value.

Assessments:  

Quizzes: Quizzes will be conducted daily in each Chapter/Unit.  My quizzes are used as a formative assessment and are used to guide differentiated instruction.   The quizzes also expose students to what could be on the Chapter/Unit Test.  My quizzes will also be used to assess the student’s mastery and growth.   There are no Quiz make up or retakes. 

Tests: A Test will be conducted at the end of each Chapter/Unit.  My tests are used as a formative assessment and are used to guide differentiated instruction.   The tests also expose students to what could be on the Final Exam (summative assessment).  My tests will also be used to assess the student’s mastery and growth.   Missed tests must be made up during CORE-Choice, or before/after school. You may retake two tests per semester (85% max retake score). 

Semester Final:  The semester final will be cumulative. The purpose of the final is to assess student mastery of the material covered during the term (summative assessment).  The concepts assessed on the final will correspond with concepts assessed on the tests conducted that semester (study the tests).

Cheating is any attempt to circumvent the evaluation process, such as by:

Consequences for cheating:

1st offense:  Redo work, teacher-student conference, and parent contact.

2nd offense: Redo work, and parent-teacher-student conference.

3rd offense:  Redo work, removal from class (possibly), and written parent notification.

Absent:  

The student is responsible for staying caught up while absent.  Assignment lists and calendars will be issued at the beginning of each month and are available on-line on my swift website (see top of front page).

Tardy: 

If the student is more than 10 minutes late to class, it will be considered an unexcused absence.  Late students will not be admitted without a teacher note or office admit slip.
