Kelso’s choices are taught in all classrooms. They are reinforced school-wide and hopefully also at home.
Students are taught to sort problems into Big (dangerous) and Small (annoying, frustrating) problems and to handle both in non-violent ways. Big problems should be reported to an adult immediately. Small problems can be solved by using Kelso’s choices. Students are encouraged to try at least two choices on their own before asking an adult for help. This discourages tattling and builds self-efficacy.

Personal Safety (Grades K, 2, 4 )
The Auburn School District requires all elementary counselors to teach Personal Safety in grades K, 2, 4.
We use the Committee for Children’s Personal Safety curriculum. It teaches children to Recognize (Is it Safe? Does it break a rule?), Refuse (to themselves or others), and Report (to an adult) when they are confronted with a situation that might be unsafe. It teaches children how to keep themselves safe in a variety of situations but the primary purpose is to protect them from abuse.
