With the start of the 2025 year comes the newest generation, Generation Beta. But there are numerous previous generations that have had an impact on the world around us.
Generations didn't start being named until 1901, the start of the 20th century. Since then we have had the Greatest Generation, the Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, and Generation X, Y, Z, Alpha, and now Beta.
The Baby Boomer generation describes people who preceded after the Silent Generation from 1946-1964 and born after World War II when the birth rate of Americans “boomed,” or increased substantially. Even though they were born after World War II, they were around for the start of the Vietnam War, which caused its own challenges.
“Well, there were a lot of protests at the time surrounding the Vietnam War. When the protests were going on, people in the protests started to raise families, and then people had to set their priorities, saying 'what is more important, the families or protests.' Which caused a lot of turmoil," seventh-grade counselor Mr. Vatne said.
This generation of people can be considered as strong-willed, with an excellent work ethic. They have contributed to most of the economy and are considered “the wealthiest generation to have ever lived,” according to Yahoo Finance. But yet most are very family-oriented, love representing others, and influencing society.
”And for our generation, us standing up for people is a big thing. I mean that's why I love counseling because I can make a difference in these circles of people around me.” Vatne said.
Generation X is a generation where people from the years 1965-1980 were born. This group of people was alive during the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall, but currently struggles with the thought of retirement with high living expenses. One of the most memorable things from this generation was the movies, since everything was on a VCR player and not as luxurious as Netflix.
“Going to our local video stores or Blockbuster to rent VHS was a very popular thing at the time,” eighth-grade mathematics teacher Mrs. Taylor said.
While Gen X watched the rise of cable and music television they also watched the development of phones, from cord phones to pagers to the evolution of the first cell phone.
”One thing that stands out about GenXers is that we are the last generation to know what life was like before the internet and cell phones,” Taylor said.
Generation Y, better known as Millennials, is the generation where the oldest, born in 1981, became adults at the beginning of the new millennium. This generation was shaped by major events like September 11, the Great Recession, and the turn of the century.
”We were the last generation that knew what exactly happened on 9/11, where we were at the time, and like, the last ones that knew where we were when it happened and what we were doing," mathematics teacher Mr. Sepulveda said.
Millennials, are most recognizably known as the generation who watched the rise of the internet, since new technology was being released and became household items.
”Some, say, the Game Boy, was most popular, but there's one that's even more popular, that was, like, the biggest thing to ever happen. It was two phones, one was the Motorola RAZR thin where it was super thin." Sepulveda said. "There was also the, the first iPhone that got released, so we were the first generation to have, like, the first smartphone.”
Generation Z is a group of people born between 1997 and either 2010 or 2012, depending on who you ask. Gen Z is shaped by the achievements in American history like the first African American president, when same-sex marriage became legalized, and Covid-19. They have relied most of their life on cell phones and other devices unlike the generations before them.
”Known as the first “digital native” generation, [Gen Z] are not only tech-savvy but are also growing up in a world where AI is becoming a cornerstone of daily life and the global economy,” FuturesPlatform.com said.
This generation has been the most impacted by major social media platforms, like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Thanks to all of this, Gen Z is viewed as a generation that seems obsessed with nostalgia and trying to look and act older than what they are.
”I think probably this generation, they're more obsessed with how to make themselves look better and way older. Their clothes, like other things, objects that really add no value,” eighth-grader Alex Singh said.
Generation Alpha is the group of people born from 2012-2024 who majority live life digitally. This generation is known as the generation that grew up on screens. With the iPad releasing and many social media platforms coming out during that timeline.
”I think the internet is really popular because Gen Alpha, they grew up on the internet, basically, like the first generation to actually, like grow up on the internet, because of online classes, social media, and all that stuff," sixth-grader Angela Chea said.
