Important Class Info
Daily Folders
We will send Daily Take Home Folders home every day! PLEASE return your child's Daily Take Home Folder every morning. We use these to communicate with you, send work home, and eventually to send home their Guided Reading books. Guided Reading books must come back every day inside their folders so that they can continue to practice these books in class AND at home until we meet and provide a new one.
Students will not be allowed to take home the new Guided Reading book from our small group until they have returned the old one to trade in. If a book is lost or damaged, the parent is responsible for paying for it before a new book will be sent home. Your child's teacher will communicate the cost of the books. Unfortunately these books can only be bought in sets of 6, so they are not easy or cheap to replace. Please be careful around food, drinks, pets, or younger siblings. Thank you!
Snack Note
We have ONE 5 minute snack each day, please send ONE easy-to-eat snack that is not too messy with your child each day as well as a SPILL PROOF bottle of PLAIN water (we have ants). They will be allowed to refill their water throughout the day as needed and will bring it home each day to be cleaned/ refilled at home for the next day.
Please check with your child's teacher to see if your classroom is NUT-FREE based on classmates' allergies.
PLAIN WATER ONLY in the classroom, any JUICE boxes must be saved in their lunch boxes for lunch time.
HOMEWORK
It is an expectation that your child reads with you for at least 20 minutes EVERY night. YOU reading to THEM can be 10 of these minutes! Make it a part of their nightly routine--ex: Every night once they are ready and in bed we have special time for "I read/ You read". Life happens and you may skip one night, but please make a conscious effort to make this time non-negotiable.
There are first grade appropriate comprehension questions in their folders as well as some that support higher-level thinking, if your child needs a challenge! Your child's teacher will let you know through Talking Points if there is any other homework your child needs to work on throughout the year. Thank you for all of your help!!
Phonics Patterns Practice
Each week we will learn 1-2 new spelling rules during phonics.
We would appreciate if parents would spend time each week practicing these spelling rules with their child. These rules can apply to many different words, but we will list a few examples to start with in the "What We are Learning" Phonics section each week. We will not have traditional "spelling tests", but will be monitoring your child's progress with these spelling patterns weekly. We will have a minor grade every 3-4 weeks that is a reflection of the patterns learned in the weeks before. The practice you do and the effort you put in at home with the spelling patterns will show up in their reading AND writing progress.
Thank You!
