A 6th grader's schedule is made up of 8 total classes. They will have 4 core subjects (Reading/Language Arts, Math, Science, and World Cultures). They are then required to take a Physical Education (PE) course, a Fine Art (Art, Band, or Choir), as well as one additional elective course. Below is information regarding the course offerings.
Mathematics: This course provides students the experiences necessary to become mathematically literate for the 21st century. Focal points in mathematics at Grade 6 are: use ratios to describe proportional relationships, geometry, measurement, probability, and adding/subtracting decimals and fractions. According to the TEA, sixth grade is the beginning of secondary mathematics, and the shift from concrete to abstract analysis is more realized.
Advanced Mathematics: This course covers 6th Grade and an introduction to the 7th Grade Math Curriculum. It emphasizes the application of mathematical concepts, requiring a deeper level of critical thinking and creative problem-solving. Successful advanced students are self-motivated, well-organized, and have a sincere interest in mathematics.
Accelerated Mathematics: This course covers the 6th and 7th Grade Math Curriculum. It is designed to prepare students for entry into advanced courses at the high school level. This is a fast-paced course because the sixth and seventh-grade standards are compacted to prepare students for Algebra I in 7th grade and Geometry in 8th grade. Successful advanced students are self-motivated, well-organized, and have a sincere interest in mathematics. Students will be automatically enrolled for this pathway if they score Masters on the 5th Grade Math STAAR.
Reading/Language Arts
Advanced Reading/Language Arts: This course assists in preparing students for the HS advanced classes and programs through sustained habits necessary for success. Successful advanced students are self-motivated, well-organized, and have a sincere interest in reading/language arts.
Science
Advanced Science: This course assists in preparing students for the HS advanced classes and programs through sustained habits necessary for success. Successful advanced students are self-motivated, well-organized, and have a sincere interest in science.
World Cultures: Designed as a study of the people and places of the contemporary world, this course is built on the Social Studies strands: history, geography, economics, government, citizenship, culture, science and technology, and social studies skills.
Study Skills: Designed as an advisory course where students learn study skills and strategies to ensure success. Students will learn a broad range of organizational strategies, time management techniques, and personal organization and study skills.
Physical Education: Students in this course will acquire the knowledge and skills for movement that provide the foundation for enjoyment and continued social development through physical activity. Students will learn specialized skills and concepts that lead to confidence and competency in a variety of physical activities. Physical activity will include lessons from team sports, individual sports, aerobic sports, and adventure outdoor sports.
Pre-Athletics: The Pre-Athletics program is designed to develop young athletes in regard to athletic skills. This program will consist of daily skills needed in Football, Volleyball, Cross Country, Basketball, Track and Field, and Soccer, as well as workouts consistent with these sports such as conditioning, weight training, speed, and agility drills, etc. Sixth grade Pre-Athletics is not a prerequisite to middle school athletics. However, the workouts are geared toward preparation for middle school athletics. Sports physicals are not required for this course at this time.
Introduces students to a variety of art mediums, themes, and artists. Students will gain an appreciation for art of different eras and cultures and practice basic art skills (painting, sketching, etc.).
(Double Reed, Clarinet, French Horn, Flute, Trumpet, Sax, Low Brass, Percussion) Students need no previous musical experience and will try out for placement by the directors on one of several instruments, including woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
No previous choir singing experience is necessary. Students will learn how to properly sing/produce sound, interact in a choir, and how to read music. Students will not have to sing by themselves! If you want to learn how to sing or improve your voice, please sign up for choir, and let's have fun singing!

Study Skills: This course focuses on the direct teaching, generalization, and maintenance of social skill development, improvement of organizational skills, technology applications, and self-advocacy. Students will work independently on coursework and receive academic support as needed.
Teen Leadership: Designed as a leadership course for sixth graders, students learn a broad overview of leadership examples and practices.
Intro to Theatre: Students will explore acting and basic technical elements of the theatre and are provided opportunities to create individual and group theatrical selections. Students will learn basic acting skills that allow them to practice self-confidence, creative thinking, public speaking, independence, problem-solving, giving and receiving feedback, and working with others to add to their life's ‘tool box.’
