The Baker/Habeas Detention Project
The Baker/Habeas Detention Project was formed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and is focused on:
assessing current conditions in the Baker Detention Facility in Baker County, Florida and
based on those results, providing assistance to immigrants detained at the Baker Detention Facility.
Surveys on conditions were sent to detainees in Fall 2020. We were able to obtain a little over 20 responses from immigrants detained at the Baker Detention Center within a few weeks and noticed a clear and disturbing trend in responses: exposure to someone with COVID-19, lack of testing, inability to socially distance, lack of proper cleaning supplies, etc. We sent more surveys to women who were supposed to be detained at Baker in September 2020. The only responses we have received since then were "returned to sender" because the immigrant is no longer there; this leads us to believe the surveys not returned to us reached those who are detained at Baker, but the completed surveys were not getting back to us any longer - the mail has stopped.
The project is funded by the American Immigration Lawyer Association's Central Florida Chapter. We are providing access to survey responses as well as resources for attorneys who may be interested in helping in any way possible.
