The Pride of Atoka recently participated in two OSSAA band contests performing two pieces. “Cliffs of Mendocino” by Alan Lee Silva and “Colonel Bogey” by Kenneth J. Alford. The first contest was the district competition on March 8th at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. They received an overall Superior (I) rating, in doing so the band qualified for state. At the State competition, they received overall an Excellent (II) rating.
In OSSAA band contests, judges give a rating based on an overall impression of the group. Each of three judges give a I through V rating, similar to an A-F letter grading scale, with one being the best, or an “A” and with a five being the worst. There were 128 schools that participated in the district competition and about 40 that qualified for state. This is what Mr. Karafotis had to say about awards,“If we score a Superior on stage or in sight reading, we will win the Outstanding Achievement award, and if we score a Superior in both, we will win the OSSAA Sweepstakes award, the highest OSSAA award an Oklahoma band can receive. After the conclusion of Thursday’s contest, only 5 bands won the sweepstakes.”

Review: 'Boys will be Bugs'
by Cavetown
Cavetown, the musical alias of British singer-songwriter Robin Skinner, is best known for the song "Boys Will Be Bugs." It was included on his album "Lemon Boy" in 2018 and has since grown to be one of his most well-known songs. A lovely guitar melody and Skinner's gentle, contemplative vocals open the tune. The song's lyrics explore the pressures and expectations of being a man while reflecting on the experience of growing up as a boy. "Boys will be bugs, right? / They're just bugs, right?" is the chorus, which is particularly memorable thanks to its catchy tune and sing-along lyrics. A blend of acoustic and electric guitars, percussion, and keyboards is used in the track's straightforward yet effective composition to create a cozy and welcoming ambiance. In the instrumental break before the bridge, Skinner's vocals soar above a light background track. Overall "Boys Will Be Bugs" is an emotional and perceptive examination of masculinity and adolescence. The music stands out in Cavetown's catalog thanks to its accessible lyrics, memorable melody, and interesting production. This song is undoubtedly worth listening to if you like indie music with deep lyrics and a DIY look.

Mrs. Lockhart
by Rachel Maltz
Mrs. Lockhart has been teaching for four years. She taught at Atoka seven years ago when she was still in school. After she graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University, she taught art and Spanish at Talihina, Oklahoma for three years. Now, she has returned to Atoka again as a teacher for Art. Before all of that, she was a waitress for five years and a Pharmacy Technician for four years. She got into art at a young age she states, “what really sparked my interest was watching my older brother create beautiful artwork out of basically nothing”. Art was also a stress reliever through the years for Mrs. Lockhart. In her free time she enjoys reading God’s Word or spending time with her family. A fact that you probably didn't know was that before graduating Mrs. Lockhart joined as many sports as she could. She played volleyball before she moved to Oklahoma, ran track and cross country, and played soccer, all while she was maintaining a full-time job. She was also a bench-warmer for basketball for one year. When asked why she wanted to become a teacher, it was a tough question but Mrs. Lockhart said “ I can really see how God prepared me and guided me to where I am today. When I was a waitress, I loved meeting and interacting with people, and when I was a pharmacy technician I loved helping people. Being a teacher gives me the opportunity to do all these things and make a difference in somebody's life, even if it is just in the slightest way. Really that’s what motivated me to be a teacher.” Now her latest project with her classes is repainting the library and putting work in even on the weekends.
