Under Texas Education Code (TEC) §33.027, a parent, district employee, or person residing in a school district may submit a written challenge to any library material in a school’s library catalog. To submit a written challenge, an eligible individual must complete and submit the Library Materials Challenge Form below or may contact the curriculum department by phone at (903)885-2153 ext. 1117 and request a physical copy of the Library Materials Challenge Form to be picked up from the SSISD Administration Building. In accordance with TEC §33.027, an individual completing the form must identify how the challenged library material violates library standards adopted by the Texas State Library and Archive Commission (TSLAC).
Upon receipt of a Library Materials Challenge Form:
After a Library Materials Challenge form has been submitted, a challenge committee will be formed.
The director of libraries will remove the title from circulation until a decision is made.
All members of the committee will review the challenged library material in its entirety. The committee will decide if the material follows the rules in EFB Local and meets the standards set forth by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.
The committee shall prepare a written report of its findings. The individual submitting the challenge shall receive a copy of the committee’s report.
The individual who submitted the challenge may appeal the decision to the AISD school board. To do this, contact the Superintendent’s office at 903-796-4194 for more information.
