After playing many by classic video games like Space Invaders and Asteroids, I was inspired to make my own version. I wanted to create a game where the player shoots asteroids while flying through space, and I wanted to give it a case with buttons, similar to a Gameboy or a Nintendo Switch. I also wanted it to be handheld, meaning I’d need a replaceable battery, and a way to access it through the back of the box.
To create the game portion, I used an Arduino connected to a 4x16 LCD screen. I also added three buttons, an A button, a B button, and a select button. These were to be positioned with two on the left, (for moving the spaceship), and one on the right (for shooting).
For the box containing the Arduino, I added spaces to hold the Arduino’s board, battery, buttons, and screen, and a removable top for easy access to the interior components. This box and the buttons were 3D printed. For the electronics, I glued the wires to a board that was also secured in the box.
