Contacts and Continuities II: 125 Years of Philippine-American Encounters, an academic conference scheduled from September 9 to October 4, 2024, at Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City, proceeds from “In the Wake of Empires: Critical Reflections on 1898 and Its Afterlives,” a program of public events organized by the Center for Puerto Rican Studies (CENTRO) at Hunter College, the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center (KJCC), Sulo: The Philippine Studies Initiative at New York University, the School of Oriental and African Studies, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the University of Hamburg in Germany, and the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. This conference aims to explore the historical and contemporary dynamics between the Philippines and the United States, providing a platform for scholars, researchers, and thought leaders to engage in meaningful dialogue and research dissemination.
The event will feature keynote addresses and panel discussions covering themes such as the influence of American education on Philippine identity, bureaucratic perceptions of the environment during the colonial period, health and nutrition issues in the early American era, and cultural expressions within the context of US-Philippine relations. Distinguished academics will lead panels on interactions and exchanges between the nations, the role of literature in shaping cultural consciousness, health policies during the American colonial period, the evolution of transportation systems, the lasting impact of American colonial education, and colonial approaches to managing the environment.
This gathering of minds aims to encourage innovative thinking and creative solutions to historical and contemporary issues, promoting a culture of engagement and enhancing the overall learning experience. Contacts and Continuities II promises to be an intellectually stimulating and creatively inspiring event, offering unique opportunities for collaboration and the exchange of ideas. We look forward to welcoming participants to this significant academic conference.
