Junior High School is a time of massive change. It is a thrilling, confusing, and sometimes overwhelming rollercoaster of finding out who you are. While classrooms train the mind, there is a vital space in school dedicated to training the heart and the social self and that is Guidance and Counseling. Guidance and counseling is not just a place to go when you are in trouble. It is a launchpad for life skills. Specifically, it is where students develop essential social and emotional skills—the ultimate toolkit for navigating teenage life.
Counseling in junior high school assists students in developing emotional intelligence by helping them identify and manage their feelings, such as exam anxiety and peer pressure. Through individual and group sessions, they learn healthy coping mechanisms. Additionally, counseling fosters connection by providing conflict-resolution training and social skills groups, teaching empathy, active listening, and boundary-setting. Finally, it aids in decision-making, guiding students to consider consequences and align their choices with personal values and future aspirations.
Guidance and counseling transforms the junior high experience. It ensures that students do not just survive these years academically, but thrive emotionally and socially, ready to take on the world.
