In support for the Performing Arts and continuing CENDANA’s approach under the ‘Empowering the Communities’ strategic pillar, the CENDANA ACE Special Effect Make-up Workshop for the Performing Arts Sector will be held in conjunction with the Performance Design Exchange event by Akademi Seni Warisan dan Budaya (ASWARA), to highlight Malaysia’s performing artists stage design practice. The workshop is to provide a learning platform for actors, costume designers and make-up artists, to exchange knowledge and learn from one another about the best practices for production design in theatre and film. It is a pilot platform for practitioners to learn and expand their knowledge on stage design via understanding the technology, skills, and processes needed in making up performers for stage and screen. This workshop will be part of reigniting a shift in value perception amongst performing arts practitioners, towards the often unseen design craft that occurs back stage.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
To raise awareness and share production design and make-up knowledge amongst performing artists;
To acknowledge the many professional and amateur make-up artists that practices within the back ends of the performing arts industry; and;

Beyond Moving with Artisans (BMoA) is an unusual blend of creative laboratory and performance in collaboration with Malaysian independent filmmaker, writer and theatre practitioner, Ridhwan Saidi. It is to use the power of storytelling, documentary, dance and multimedia to explore a new way of presentation & share the exploration journey from bodily movement archive (Remembering) to interpretation (Imagination) stage, and now entering the stage of choreography (Creation). It is an extended project of Moving with Artisans(MoA) which is based on the oral history of five traditional jobs and skills on the verge of extinction in Butterworth city (Malaysia). MoA was a mixed art presentation which includes different dance genres together with the visual arts, through collaboration with Haffendi Anuar, a Malaysian artist based in London. The five units of young artists were paired with five artisans from Butterworth City to make the intergenerational connection beyond recalling nostalgic memories, but also cultivates an appreciation of the things in this world that take time (and effort) to do or to achieve.
The presentation will be followed by a discussion with Bilqis Hijjas, Jo Kukathas and Dhinesha Karthigesu. The discussion will focus on how the design aspect can enrich the production values.
This presentation is supported by Boh and Kakiseni.

Shcism is a work about how the boundaries of reality and stage collide. Inspired by Guy Debord's the society of spectacle. Schism directly speaks to the problems and obsessions of the Malaysian performing arts scene with visuals. And ultimately Schism is laying the groundwork of how artist and the spectator sometimes confuses fact to fiction. Gossips to actual events and delve deep into personal and presentational. Ultimately it's about the moment where art is appreciated and depreciated. Debord influence today can be found on every screen that you look at. It is the advertisements plastered on the public transportation and the pop-up ads that appear in your browser on your phone. The spectacle reduces reality to an endless supply of sell able fragments, while encouraging us to focus on appearances. For Debord, this constituted an unacceptable "degradation" of our lives.
