Honorlock is ASU’s proctoring solution for high-stakes exams within fully online courses. Honorlock combines AI technology and live test proctors to promote academic honesty and ensure your exam session is completed in accordance with the assessment guidelines outlined by your instructor. Honorlock works using a browser plugin to the Google Chrome browser. You do not need to create an account or schedule an appointment to use Honorlock—it is available 24/7, and all that is required is a computer, a working webcam/microphone, your ID, and a stable internet connection.
To get started using Honorlock, review the minimum system requirements. Then, download Google Chrome and install the Honorlock Chrome Extension. Google Chrome is required to use Honorlock.
Next, complete the Honorlock Student Tutorial. You will be guided through a series of steps to ensure Honorlock is working properly, including verifying system compatibility and familiarizing yourself with the authentication steps that precede an exam session (i.e., test taker photo, photo ID verification, room/workspace scan, etc.).
If you have previously completed an Honorlock-enabled assessment in another course, you likely already have the Honorlock Chrome Extension installed and are familiar with the proctoring process. However, recent updates to Honorlock may cause technical issues with older installations.
To help prevent potential problems during your exam, it is recommended that you uninstall and then reinstall the Honorlock Chrome Extension before your assessment, and complete the W. P. Carey Honor Code Acknowledgement or other “simulated” quiz set up by your instructor to confirm Honorlock is working properly.
Reference the course syllabus and Canvas site to review the assessment guidelines provided by your instructor and that are specific to your course.
When you are ready to complete your assessment:
Log into Canvas.
Go to your course.
Click on your exam.
Click "Launch Proctoring." This step will begin the Honorlock authentication process, where you will take a picture of yourself, show your ID, and complete a scan of your area.
When asked to show an ID card, only use a state-issued ID card, Sun Card, or ASU Mobile ID.
DO NOT use a bank card or military (DOD) ID card.
Following the authentication process, Honorlock will begin recording your exam session through your webcam, microphone, and recording your screen.
Honorlock uses AI technology to identify potential issues that may conflict with your assessment guidelines. During your exam, a proctor may reach out to you if they are concerned about a potential issue. When this happens, the assessment is briefly paused.
Additionally, Honorlock has an integrity algorithm that can detect search engine use, so please do not attempt to search for answers during your exam session, even if it's on a secondary device.
Most technical issues with Honorlock can be resolved by completing the following steps:
Uninstall Honorlock.
Clear Chrome cache and cookies.
Update Chrome browser.
Fully restart your computer.
Reinstall the Honorlock Chrome Extension.
If you encounter technical issues that require support, reach out to the ASU Experience Center, available 24/7:
Click the “Help” icon in the Canvas Global Navigation Menu.
Call 1-855-278-5080 and follow the prompts for Canvas help.
Initiate a Live chat with the ASU Experience Center.
Additionally, Honorlock Support can be reached 24/7 by live chat, visiting Contact Honorlock Support, or within the exam itself via the Honorlock toolbar.
IMPORTANT: When contacting the ASU Experience Center, please ask for a support ticket number and email that to your instructor. You may also save your transcript history with Honorlock Support and share that information with your instructor. For technical issues, please do not contact your instructor as your first point of support. Their availability may limit how quickly they can respond, and they will likely refer you to the ASU Experience Center or Honorlock Support for troubleshooting assistance.
Your instructor may require the use of a side-angle camera as the source of your recorded exam session. Reference the course syllabus and Canvas site to understand the details and requirements that are specific to your course.
The side-angle camera may be an external webcam, or you may use your iPhone or Android device as a webcam alternative using the Honorlock Mobile Application.
For proper set-up and configuration of the camera for side-angle view, follow the steps at Setting Up a Side-Angle Camera.
Keep in mind the following:
The ideal angle/view for the external webcam, on your left or right side, should capture the profile of your face, your desk or workspace, and your computer screen.
This may require placing the camera on a surface that is not your desk, such as an end table.
Some type of mount to provide elevation will be useful, but putting it on top of a few books or a box should help provide the right view.
Be sure to test your technical setup early to avoid last-minute issues.
If your course uses an integrated textbook or publisher-provided content, your exams may be hosted on a third-party publisher platform (such as McGraw-Hill Connect, Pearson MyLab, Cengage MindTap, or Macmillan Achieve). In these cases, you will still access the exam through Canvas, and your testing session may be proctored using Honorlock.
View these instructions for guidance on how to use Honorlock with a third-party exam.
When you are ready to complete your assessment:
Log into Canvas.
Go to your course.
Click on “Honorlock WPC” in the Course Navigation Menu.
To the right of the exam you wish to take, click “Launch.”
Click "Launch Proctoring." This step will begin the Honorlock authentication process, where you will take a picture of yourself, show your ID, and complete a scan of your area.
Open a new tab, and navigate to the Canvas course. Click on the link to your third-party exam to access the third-party site, just like you do when completing assignments that are not enabled with Honorlock. Do not return to the Honorlock tab and click on the Launch button again. This will restart the authentication process.
Once the third-party exam is launched, there should be a password field. Students should not attempt to manually enter a password into the password field. While the third-party exam password field is in focus, open the Honorlock proctoring window and select “Insert Password.” Honorlock will then automatically fill in the password on the third-party website.
IMPORTANT: If you are having difficulty opening the Honorlock proctoring window, it is likely Honorlock is still running, but the application may have been minimized while you navigated to the third-party exam. Honorlock is on your computer's task/programs bar; simply click on it. The Honorlock window with “Insert Password” will appear. Click on “Insert Password.” On the test page, click “Submit” for the password.
While taking the third-party exam, you should hide or reposition the Honorlock toolbar so you can view the test navigation options and prevent the toolbar from obstructing your view of the exam content.
Please review the ASU Online Proctored Exam Guidelines. This document outlines proctoring and examination security expectations for students taking proctored exams in an online course.
Keep in mind the following:
Do not leave the exam environment at any time during the exam, unless specifically allowed in the exam instructions by your instructor.
Dress as if you were in a classroom setting.
Hats, hoods, headphones, earbuds, or earplugs are NOT allowed during the exam taking process.
Do not talk or communicate by any other means during the exam.
