Can students work in groups?

ASU has funding for six projects per school to join URI. Students may indicate on their application or after if they want to work with a partner and who that partner is. Each school's URI Coordinator will select six projects with a strict maximum of 12 students per school entering URI.

How many research projects can a faculty mentor?

The faculty is welcome to be a mentor for as many student projects as they can handle - without effecting quality.

The mentor stipend is $500 per semester. The faculty will only receive a stipend on the number of projects, not the number of students they mentor. If they mentor two projects they will not get a double stipend, but a slightly larger stipend.

Can the URI Coordinator also be the URI Mentor?

The Coordinator is welcome to be a mentor!

If the coordinator is also a mentor, the coordinator will not receive two stipends. A coordinator with two roles will just receive a small increase to their coordinator stipend depending on the number of research projects they mentor.

How does a URI Coordinator match students with Mentors?

A URI Mentor's experience with research mentoring is more important success than their field of expertise

The objective of URI is not to conduct in-depth scientific research, the goal is a receive mentoring on the basics of preparing a research question, doing limited data collection, and presenting in English at a large conference. Although matching the students with mentors who have a similar interest is helpful, it is more important to match the students with a URI Mentor who can effectively guide them through the basic phases of research. Therefore, a URI mentor's experience with research mentoring is more important success than their field of expertise.

When and how will students receive Research Grants?

BUILD-IT will only reimburse students for their expenses if they have receipts. Student must keep both the paper receipt and photos of all their project related expenses. For purchases above 200,000 VND the students should collect the Red Receipt/ Official Invoice. Because gathering receipts is important, it would be best if students planned all their purchases in advance, get advice for purchasing from their mentors, and immediately took photos of their receipts, and saved the paper receipts in a safe place. If receipts are sent via Email it is important to keep those emails.

Requirements to be a URI Mentor :

• Faculty who are confident in the basics of research ( PhD or research experience is important)
• Agree to mentoring commitments and milestones for the research project they are matched with
• Attend All URI mentoring meeting with students or URI Coordinator - give mentoring in good faith, on time, and to the best of your ability
• Track student meetings to assure that students are progressing in their research
• Faculty who will attend URI Mentor monthly coaching calls with URI Coordinator, and BUILD-IT

Obligations of a URI Mentor

• Complete and Fulfill this Student Mentorship Agreement’s commitments
• Attend URI mentoring meeting with students / URI Coordinator / or ASU
• Give mentoring and feedback in good faith, on time, and to the best of your ability
• Work with URI Coordinator to track mentorship meetings and status reports to assure students progress
• Inform student ahead of time if a meeting must be delayed
• Provide encouragement and support for data collection, poster design, presentation skills

Teamwork requirements

If a student decides to work a 2-student team, both students must complete these requirements to get the URI Certificate from ASU.

- Both students must attend and participate in the URI Status Reports, poster creation, practice presentations, and sign the research agreement.

- Both students must complete the teamwork review survey separately.

- Mentors and URI Coordinators must agree that the student team completed all the requirements to the best of their ability.
