About TML

The TechnoMaterials Lab is a transdisciplinary space for teaching, research and creative inquiry into, through, across, and around the material aspects of technology. The TML is designed to provoke experiential learning, whether through interaction with vintage gaming systems to creation of knitted data visualizations.

Bringing together play and game studies with critical making and DIY culture, the TML is a space for world-building and re-imagining futures. The TML is grounded in media studies and our research areas include: play studies, critical design, interactive media arts, textile arts, technofeminism, STS, queer and gender studies, and media archaeology.

The TML is driven by questions about the relationship between the digital, the material and the affective and challenges the divide between the physical and digital.

Founded in 2023, the TML is located in Stauffer Communication Arts B at Arizona State University. The space hosts workshops from ASU faculty and visiting researchers and is open to students and faculty.

We especially encourage the involvement of students and are open to honors thesis proposals.
