Learn more about the Internship Guidelines and Application Process.
Yes. The process is similar to finding a job. Students need to identify opportunities that align with their interests, skillsets, academic schedule, and location. Part of the learning process includes identifying suitable opportunities, and applying and interviewing for them. The Interplanetary Initiative offers support and advisement throughout this process, but ultimately the student is responsible for securing an appropriate internship and registering for credit.
Check out the Internship Search Tips page for some suggestions on how to get started finding an internship.
Credit cannot be awarded for an internship completed in the past. Students must complete their internship and be enrolled in credit simultaneously.
IPI 484 is offered in C session during fall, spring, and summer terms.
Please note: summer tuition applies.
You cannot get internship credit for a job that you currently hold, but there may be an opportunity to create an internship within your current organization. The experience must be a new one for you—distinct from your regular responsibilities—and directly related to technological leadership. Your current employer would need to be in support of this proposal. This option is generally only recommended in special situations for students who are working full-time.
To learn more, check out the Work Variance section of the Types of Internships page.
Credits are based off the number of hours you complete at your internship.
Student Interns need to complete a minimum of 270 hours during a 6-credit internship. This is about 18 hours per week for a 15-week internship, or 34 hours per week for an 8-week summer internship. Actual hours per week will depend on duration of internship and agreement with internship supervisor.
Student Interns need to complete a minimum of 135 hours during a 3-credit internship. This is about 9 hours per week for a 15-week internship, or 17 hours per week for an 8-week summer internship. Actual hours per week will depend on duration of internship and agreement with internship supervisor.
Along with the 9 credits of immersive internships you will complete, there are two required courses:
IPI 400: Fundamentals of Career Success covers internship prep topics, including resume and interview tips, internship searching, networking, etc. It is recommended you take this prior this early in your program.
IPI 402: Technological Leadership Career Exploration covers career prep with an emphasis on personal exploration and articulation of your goals leading your career.
IPI 484 is used for the internships you actively complete.
Yes! After you have secured an internship, you may be eligible for an internship scholarship from The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
