A systems approach to achieving our commitment to diversity, accessibility, inclusion, and equity
Welcome!
This electronic resource library has been created as an extension of my poster presentation at the 2023 Association of Science and Technology Centers annual conference in Charlotte, NC. Over the next few weeks, this page will be updated with information that is intended to help conference attendees delve deeper into the topic of organizational structures, review emerging research on diversity, accessibility, inclusion, and equity, and to connect with the researcher.
Preconference Posts:

Just one more sleep until ASTC 2023! My final pre-conference video is a bit longer than the others, but if you have the time, I invite you to watch it in full. Data from neuroscience has been available for more than 4 years linking equity to our very existence!
So, let's stop just talking about diversity and start finding meaningful ways to be equitable! We need to set REAL, measurable, time-bound goals. One of my favorite quotes from this video: "We will increase racial and gender representation by 50% on our team in 3 years."
This doesn't necessarily mean kicking people out or taking anyone's power. It means inviting others to have a place at the table, to have their voices heard, and bring more/different perspectives to your decision-making teams! One great way to do this is to explore how a matrix organization structure could work at your organizations!
Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

Diversity and inclusion are all about embracing different perspectives. Organizations that listen to these different perspectives develop sustainable, innovative solutions faster, are better at connecting with their employees, customers, and other stakeholders, and are more likely to thrive, even in the face of adversity. One way to give these voices more power is by #rethinkingorganizationalstructures

Critical Theory time. Let's take what we think we know and take another look. I found this video today, actually, and thought it fit better than my planned post. Enjoy!

Time to take some of the fundamental concepts we've learned about leadership and organizations so far this week and use that knowledge to solve a problem. But what problem?
Diversity and inclusion, of course! It's time for leaders to practice "single-mindedness" and develop revolutionary methods to get at the heart of this issue.

So far this week, we've explored the basic concept of power, which begets leadership, and therefore organizations. Then we reviewed how leadership and organizational culture evolved through time. Now, it's time to investigate how power is distributed within organizations vis-a-vis their structure.
No structure is inherently better or worse than another. Each structure has advantages and disadvantages, and therefore, a time and place wherein they are most effective.
Think about how, where, when, and why leaders might prefer one over another. Make sure to stop by my poster session "Rethinking Organizational Structures" at the #2023ASTC Conference from October 6th-8th to talk about your ideas!

Now that we have been introduced to the concept of POWER, it's time to talk about the evolution of organizational culture. That is, how and why organizations behave the way they do, and what that means for those of us who belong to them.
Take a moment to watch this 4.5-minute video that summarizes the work of Frederic Laloix from his book "Reinventing Organizations."

On October 8, I'll be presenting my graduate research on "Rethinking Organizational Structures" at the 2023 Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) Conference in Charlotte, NC.
Check back regularly over the next two weeks to check out some interesting resources related to the scientific study of leadership and how we can use lessons learned to create more inclusive and equitable organizations!
