The Japanese National Honor Society--College Chapter (JNHS--CC) recognizes and encourages scholastic achievement and excellence in the study of the Japanese language. The American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ) is pleased to assist teachers with a way to recognize their outstanding students, maintain high standards in Japanese language education, and promote activities that give students ways to use their language skills on their campuses and in their communities.
Eligibilities for nomination:
Students must have taken JPN classes for 5 semesters or longer (at least completing JPN301 at ASU).
Students can be nominated regardless of being JPN major/minor or non-JPN major/minor.
Minimum JPN GPA 3.5 and accumulative GPA 3.0.
Students who are nominated for membership receive Certificates of Excellence and red-and-white cords to wear at graduation and are recognized on the AATJ website and its newsletter.

Students are able to receive a monthly stipend in the exchange program at Hiroshima Shudo University. The funding is offered either in the full-year or the spring semester program (There’s no fall semester program in Shudo). For more information, please contact Makkie Neuhouser (Makkie.Neuhouser@asu.edu), International Coordinator, at the Global Education Office.
The deadline for the full-year program is January 15th and the spring semester program is June 15th (priority consideration deadlines).

The U.S.-Japan Bridging Foundation, in partnership with the American Association of Teachers of Japanese, is excited to open applications for scholarships to study in Japan beginning in Fall 2024. The term of study can be the Fall 2024 semester, the 2024-25 academic year, or the Spring 2025 semester. Please note: There will be no later, separate application deadline for Spring 2025 scholarships.
Bridging Scholarship recipients receive stipends of up to $2,500 for a semester’s study program or up to $4,500 for an academic-year program. Awardees join the Bridging Scholar community and gain access to our extensive alumni, donor, and supporter network. Foundation programming includes in-person and virtual mentorship opportunities as well as career and networking events.

Awardees study in Japanese at a Japanese university in Japan
Consulting the official Course Guide of Japanese Studies Program, applicants select one of two courses of study, focusing on either the Japanese language or Japan and Japanese culture, and three preferred universities. Final placement is determined by MEXT.
“Study in Japan: A Guide for U.S. Students” by the Embassy of Japan is a new, introductory guide.
“Study in Japan” by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) is a thorough, regularly updated guide.
“Scholarships for Study in Japan” by JASSO links to a pamphlet listing three different kinds of scholarships.
This program provides academic year fellowships to undergraduate and graduate students in foreign language and area or international studies. The goals of the fellowship programs include: develop knowledge, resources, and training for modern foreign language and area/international studies, attain foreign language acquisition and fluency, and train international experts to meet nationwide needs.
Graduate Students: Academic Year: $15,000 living stipend plus tuition and mandatory fees up to $18,000.
Undergraduate Students: Academic Year: $5,000 living stipend plus tuition and mandatory fees up to $10,000.
The Critical Languages Scholarship (CLS) Program provides overseas foreign language instruction and cultural enrichment experiences in 14 different languages:
Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, and Urdu: Beginning, advanced beginning, intermediate and advanced levels;
Arabic, Persian, and Portuguese: Advanced beginning, intermediate and advanced levels;
Chinese, JAPANESE, and Russian: Intermediate and advanced levels. (*The Japanese scholarship program requires two years of prior study.)
The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.
Benefits: All CLS Program costs are covered for participants including: travel to and from the student's U.S. home city and program location, a mandatory Washington, D.C. pre-departure orientation, applicable visa fees, room, board, group-based intensive language instruction, program-sponsored travel within country, and all entrance fees for CLS Program cultural enhancement activities.

This program is sponsored by the Japanese government and awards a full scholarship including a round trip air fee, tuition, entrance fee, and monthly stipend for 2 years of MA program, and 3 years for PhD in Japan. The application period for September 2020 admission is January 27 - February 5, 2020.

The Summer Foreign Language and Area Studies award provides eligible students with a $2,500 stipend and up to $5,000 in summer tuition to go towards a summer intensive language program of their choice in Asia.
