Wooden Chopsticks, Metal Chopsticks: Grab Japanese and Korean Culture through the Languages
Japan and Korea are neighboring countries that share many similarities and contrasts in customs and language. For example, both countries use chopsticks but did you know that the types of chopstick are different? What other similarities or differences do these countries share?
In this lecture, by sampling from various Korean and Japanese video clips, we will explore some unique aspects of the two cultures, especially as it connects to how people communicate with one another.
This lecture is for everyone--regardless of your previous knowledge of either country's language. All are welcomed to explore the two cultures with us!

2021 Staley Lecture by Professor Michael Emmerich of UCLA, who is a world-renowned scholar of early modern and modern Japanese literature; a prolific translator whose translations include works ranging from the Nobel Prize-winning author Kawabata Yasunari to immensely popular contemporary writers like Yoshimoto Banana and Takahashi Gen'ichirō; and a highly visible public intellectual engaged in contemporary discussions of translation, canonization, and world literature.

The Terasaki Nibei Foundation is sponsoring a video contest open to all Japanese learners. Students (non-native speakers of Japanese) at all levels and in all learning situations are invited to submit a 10-12-minute video or a 10-15-minute script or story that can serve as the basis for a short film on the theme of “What Is Japan for You”.
