SHPRS Research Grants (aka University Graduate Fellowships) are competitive awards allocated once in fall and once in spring (for use in spring or summer) that provide up to $5,000 to assist doctoral students in completing the research necessary for their dissertations.
Projects, travel, and research funded by this award must directly relate to work on a doctoral dissertation. Almost any type of research related to a dissertation may be funded.
PhD students will receive email communication from their program manager each semester with deadlines and other submission details.
The history faculty at ASU are pleased to welcome applications for the ASU History MA Graduate Excellence Fellowship. This merit-based program supports promising students who are committed to advancing ASU’s Inclusive Excellence goals. We seek to train historians from the widest range of backgrounds so that historical knowledge and historical professions benefit from the broadest perspectives and engage with the most inclusive teaching and research possible. In line with the ASU Charter’s focus on access, inclusion and excellence, this fellowship program provides up to two years of funding that includes tuition remission, healthcare and an annual stipend ($25,586 for the 2024-2025 academic year). Recipients will work 20 hours per week each semester as a Teaching Assistant and participate in regular professional development activities.
Deadlines:
The History MA Graduate Excellence Fellowship has a priority deadline in spring each year for the following academic year. If positions remain available after this deadline, we will make further decisions on a rolling basis after that point if positions are available.

Award: A maximum of $500 from the Graduate College to cover travel and conference registration only. SHPRS will provide up to $275 in additional funds (for a total of $775) depending upon the submitted budget and the availability of funds.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be graduate students in good standing with their academic unit and the Graduate College. Due to limited funding, the Graduate College can only fund 2 travel applications per program.

The GSG Individual Travel Grant exists to support and promote the success of ASU graduate and professional student research and professional development by increasing ASU’s reputation as a Research Extensive Institution; promoting the ASU graduate and professional student community at large; and fostering opportunities for professional growth. It runs on a monthly cycle and provides funding to support individual student travel to regional, national and international conferences, trainings, workshops, exhibitions, performances, competitions and other activities directly related to students’ graduate programs of study or professional development.

Graduate College Fellowships provide up to $5,000 in need-based awards to aid in recruitment, retention, and professional development of ASU graduate students. Students must have a FAFSA on file and meet other requirements listed here:

Completion Fellowships are intended to support the degree completion of graduate students. The Graduate Completion Fellowship provides funding to graduate students in their last semester or year of their graduate program. It is expected that recipients will have completed all course work for their degree and will only need to register for 1 credit hour. Students should not be nominated for more than two terms.

SHPRS offers a number of fellowships annually. These include:
Lorig Public History Scholarship - $1,000 for an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in history with a focus on public history.
Michael A. Steiner Memorial Award - an award given in spring semester to a student defending a history thesis in British or European history.
Krueger Scholarship - $1,500 awarded annually ($750 each semester) to a history graduate student focusing on Modern or Medieval European or English history.
Emma Goldman History Travel Grant - $977 for travel during a semester or summer term related to women's history and/or migration studies.
Wallace E. Adams Memorial Award - for undergraduate or graduate students who demonstrates excellence in the study of European history.
William C. Jenkins Fellowship - for graduate students enrolled in the MA in teaching, history program.
