Work-Life Balance
As it turns out, there's more to life than Grad School! Maintaining a balance between research and everything else can be hard, so we've compiled a list of fun activities to do in Tempe and the surrounding area.
1. Rock Climbing
The Phoenix Rock Gym is a fun way to be active even when it's miserably hot outside. There's several SESE folk who climb frequently!
2. Public Library Culture Passes
If you have a Tempe Library Card, you can check out a free pass to a wide range of activities such as museums, the zoo, and the botanical gardens.
3. Trivia
A large number of the local bars put on trivia nights weekly. Some of our favorites include Snakes and Lattes, Devil's Advocate, and Illegal Pete's
4. Classes at the ASU Gym
The ASU fitness centers offer several group classes, free for ASU students.
5. ASU Painting Class
Offered several times a week, Sun Devil Fitness puts on a painting class with all materials provided!
6. Adult Sports Leagues
If you want to get out of the ASU bubble, Tempe Parks and Rec organizes adult sports leagues. You can also find a map of parks that offer specific recreational activities here.
7. Hiking
The valley has a lot of really awesome hiking. We've marked some of our favorite places on the map above! Just be sure to watch the weather and bring lots of water.
8. Shows
There's always some fun shows happening in the valley. Check out what's happening at Gammage Auditorium, Tempe Improv, Drunk Shakespeare, and other venues like Crescent Ballroom, The Van Buren, and the Musical Instrument Museum.
9. Museums
There are several amazing museums in the PHX Valley, a lot of which offer free admission on certain days. The biggest include the Heard Museum, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Musical Instrument Museum.
10. Sports
Phoenix is home to several sports teams. While tickets can get pricy, the Diamondbacks often offer $5 tickets for students. Plus their stadium is air conditioned!
