DIRECTIONS
Note: This activity works best during circle time.
Gather children in a circle and place all sun safety items in the center of the circle.
Talk about sun safety (e.g., why it is important to protect our skin from the sun) and discuss how Ray and the Sunbeatables use their superpowers to protect their skin from the sun.
Tell children that Ray and the Sunbeatables have lost all of their superpowers and need help finding them.
Explain how to play “I Spy.” Tell children that the superpowers are in the circle. After describing an item, ask children to point to it in the circle.
Begin the activity by using the following examples and adapt as necessary:
Example 1: “I spy a sun safety superpower that protects your head, face and ears.” Children should look for/point to a hat.
Example 2: “I spy a sun safety superpower that protects your eyes.” Children should look for/point to sunglasses.
Once children have identified the sun safety object, discuss how it will protect their skin from the sun. Examples:
Sunscreen: We rub sunscreen on our skin from head to toe to protect our skin from the sun.
Protective clothing: We wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to cover as much skin as we can to protect our skin from the sun.
Sunglasses: We wear sunglasses to protect our eyes from the sun.
Hats: We wear wide-brimmed hats to protect our face, head, ears and neck from the sun.
