Show And Tell With Ray
Activity 1.3
DIRECTIONS
Gather the children in a circle and ask them the following:
“What is the sun?”
“How can you be sun safe?”
Note: Remind children about Ray and the Sunbeatables and their sun safety superpowers.
Using the bag of sun safety items, pull out one item at a time and ask children:
“What is this?”
“How does it protect our skin?”
Examples:
Sunscreen: We rub sunscreen on our skin from head to toe to protect our skin from the sun.
Protective clothing: We wear long-sleeved shirts or sleeved shirts and long pants or long shorts to cover as much skin as we can to protect our skin from the sun.
Sunglasses: We wear sunglasses to protect our eyes from the sun.
Hats: We wear wide-brimmed hats to protect our face, head, neck and ears from the sun.
Once the sun safety items have been reviewed, ask children:
What did you bring today that is sun safe?
Can you show us how to wear the sun safety item(s) that you brought?
What are you wearing today that is sun safe?
When do you need to be sun safe? (Responses may include: “every day” or “whenever you are outside.”)
Where do you need to be sun safe? (Responses may include: playground, outside, at the swimming pool, at the beach, or at home.)
Do you think we should wear sunscreen? Why? (As you ask the question, show children the sunscreen bottle. Repeat for protective clothing, hats, sunglasses and shade.)
